Story by REDintern Tan Jack Long. Pictures by Lai Jun Wei/Red Sports.
Republic Polytechnic Sports Complex, Thursday, July 3, 2008 – Meridian Junior College (MJC) began their title defense in style as they cruised past Temasek Junior College (TJC) 12-0 in the opening match of the A Division Floorball Championship season.
For the first 7 minutes in the first period, TJC looked as though they could hold the defending champions to a draw with their tight defending and a string of spectacular saves by the TJC goalkeeper. TJC also started the game very well despite being the underdogs with the very first shot in the game.
However, with 7:41 remaining in the first period of the match, MJC broke the deadlock when Harold Lim (#14) took advantage of a goal mouth melee and slotted the ball into the net. The attack started with an MJC defender sending the ball up the left flank for their forward to cross it into the centre of the attacking semi-circle. The TJC defenders failed to clear the ball and Harold made them pay.
The second goal for MJC came just 2 minutes after their first and again, it was a result of slack defending from TJC. Yeow Di Qiang (#7) of MJC capitalised on the poor defending from TJC as he pounced on a loose ball which the TJC defenders failed to clear. Di Qiang showed composure as he calmly dribbled past a TJC defender before drilling the ball into the goal.
MJC players exploded into action right and scored just 46 seconds into the 2nd period. Winston Cheong (#21) of MJC scored from a Glendon Phua (#20) shot that was going wide. Winston was at the right place at the right time to deflect Glendon’s shot in to make it 3-0 in favour of MJC. About 4 minutes later, TJC again displayed their weakness in defense as Chong Shyang Long (#22) of MJC deflected a pass to push the scoreline to 4-0. TJC, on the other hand, were extremely quiet in attack.
In the last period of the game, MJC showed why they are the defending champions. The MJC players went into a goalscoring frenzy as they put 8 goals past the TJC goalkeeper. Glendon Phua (#20) of MJC finally scored his first goal of the game in the period and eventually went on to score a hat-trick after working tirelessly for his team the entire game. Glendon first sent a rocket into the top corner of the goal after a combination of slick moves and passes. The second was a solo effort when he stole the ball from a TJC player on the left flank and then dribbled skillfully past two TJC defenders before firmly slotting the ball into the goal. His third goal came in the dying seconds of the game with 0.03 left on the clock.
Lastly, credits must go to both MJC and TJC as both teams showed that in sports, winning and losing isn’t everything. They showed that sports is about respect and attitude. MJC never looked as though they would stop attacking because they were in a comfortable lead. Neither did TJC give up when they were down 5-0, 6-0 or even 10-0. They just kept playing, playing and playing.
Because this is sport, and this is our passion.

In case you didn’t know the rules of the game before posting, here’s a link to the BASIC rules of floorball. Enjoy.

Speaking of ignorance, i think i just heard a pot calling the kettle black. Well, there remains a lesson to be learnt- find out facts before you post about things you’re unsure of. ‘stepping out of box rule’ DOES NOT EXIST. Just when u think what you saw was funny, how about considering about what you just posted.
Also, I strongly believe that this comment box should be constructive. Therefore, if you’re thinking of flaming again, please reconsider.
Thanks
There was another MJ keeper who threw the ball which hit an IJ player. Then the MJ keeper stood up and went out to “save” the ball by trying to kick it. He was stepping out of the goalkeeper’s box. He didn’t even know about the “stepping-out-of-box” rule. It was very hilarious. We’re at the seats saying that he might as well walk to the other end of the court to catch the ball. hahahaha.
Btw, can they update more on the Adivs Floorball matches?
Anyway, since there are so many people here, what you guys think of the referees?
Oh man im sorry if i offended anyone but its seriously a habit ive cultivated probably a bad habit… it happens every other game i play somehow but i guess thats jus how i play sorry if i passed off as being arrogant yea
Haha! If anyone remembered the MJ-IJ match – I really loved the keeper (the one wearing a jersey with the Singapore flag upon it – is he a national player?); he was standing up relaxed and cool with his hands on his hip while the IJ players were continuously looking for opportunities to attack and the IJ keeper tense and crouched at his goalpost. It was as if he couldn’t care less about the IJ offensive – a great psychological tactic that worked well for the enjoyment of the crowd albeit its perceived arrogance by IJ supporters. :p
TJC fought extremely hard and they never gave up. come on guys! 2 more matches to go! Put the 1st two matches behind and look forward. Even if we dont make it to the quarter finals, lets show AC and IJ what we’ve got!
Hey I’m a player from NYJC. 🙂
Gee – I don’t think I can spare the attention in matches to record down the details of the game because of my role; I’ll probably be looking more at the techniques and stuff that a reader would not be exactly interested in.
Besides, as a school player, my journalistic credibility comes into question isn’t it?
I totally agreed that tjc guys was playing well on the match with yjc guys. esp during the first period.
If you’re at the seats watching, you can also see the tjc girls and yjc girls screaming and shouting their lungs out to cheer for their guys.
During the second period, yjc had their come back and tjc was unable to endure, leaving yjc to score their 1st goal of the day, similarly giving a reason for their girls to cheer even louder.
At the seats i can confirm, the cheering competition for yjc girls and tjc girls are even more intense than the match on court. The girls are like competing on who’s cheer is louder and longer.
“LETS GO YJ LETS GO”
“FIGHT ON TJ FIGHT ON”
BEEP BEEP BEEP.
YJ stops going. TJ stops fighting.
YJ guys gave their girls 6 reasons to cheer.
but, TJ guys gave their girls nothing except disappointment.
TJ is a young team, continue to endure, you’ll see ur future.
*TJ guy keeper is really good, dont giv up!
As for YJ guys. . .
STRIVE HARDER AND CHAMPION WILL BE IN UR HANDS.

You send it, we post it 😉
This site works on the basis that readers can send in their own stories regarding their own sports.
hi ajani, may i know which school you’re from?
Hi Ajani, why don’t you send in an article on the games from Day 2? It’d be nice to have some stories from the readers’ perspective. 🙂
Anyway since the article still isn’t up (if it’s gonna be)… After Day 2 of ‘A’ Division Guys…
RJC 5 -1 NYJC
VJC 6 – 0 NJC
MJC 12 – 0 IJC
TJC 0 – 6 YJC
Good job to all players! Team Temasek fought exceptionally-well this time round with a stalemate in the first period in one of the best fights this entire season so far – that was until the Yishun captain, disappointed with his team’s inability to score, broke out in angry fits and had to be calmed by the coach before going out to score YJ’s first goal in the second period. Fantastic, tense match both teams had!
why is there no coverage on the singpore floorball league?
great ‘A’ division so far!!!
I believe that a victor should always be humble and not be arrogant.
Any results of the Adiv girls matches? GO YJC!
I do believe that the results of the day for RJC VS NJC was 6-2 rather than 5-2, the same as the match for VJC VS MI. 🙂 That brings both RJC and VJC tied for first tentatively and NJC; MI bottom for their table.
‘A’ Division continues on Tuesday – with NYJC to play their first match in the table. Go NYJC!!
Thanks for the article, however there are still some errors. The 4th goal was scored by Chong Shyang Long (#22) un assisted . At the time of his goal i was on the bench and his partner Alvin Chan (#12) was at the goal. Bronson’s name should be replaced with Di Qiang . MJC Floorball team sincerely thanks you for your hard work and we hope to see the edited review soon.

Thanks for the edit.
However, there are still certain part of the article that have to be reviewed.
For paragraph 4, the second player name mentioned was not edited. It’s found one line behind the edited player name.
Also, at MJC roster, Bronson is #77, not 7&.
Once again, I look forward to the reviewed article, and i thank you for your effort in doing so

that person in one of the above photos is not #73, he is Thaddeus #17
MJ really went out and showed everyone that there is no complacency in their game despite entering this competition as firm favourites..
a deserved victory for the Meridian team..all the best for your title defense
I believe your editor got some of the Mjc roster wrong in the article-Meridian Junior College crush Temasek Junior College 12-0 in A Division Floorball.
The article is found at http://redsports.sg/2008/07/04/mjc-tjc-floorball/
The errors are:
bronson-#77
diqiang-#7
azmeer-#99
jianwen-#16
Also, because of the initial error, some of the naming of players in the articles are wrong. I look forward to the edited article, and i sincerely thank you for your hard work.
Thank You,
Yeow Di Qiang
