A Division Floorball Boys: Tampines Sports Complex, Thursday, July 10, 2008 – Meridian Junior College (MJC) continues scoring frenzy with a 8-2 win over Anglo-Chinese Junior College (ACJC). Nonetheless, despite facing the floorballing giant MJC, ACJC put up a great fight and even remarkably denied all goals by MJC in the first period. In fact, ACJC #4 became the first person to score against MJC this season in the 12:29 min and allowed ACJC to lead for the whole of the first period.
Alas, lady luck did not continue shining on ACJC. Merely seconds into the second period, MJC had started their onslaught of goals. MJC (Winston Cheong) #21 opened accounts by scoring in the 00:20 min. Goals trickled in with accurate shots by MJC Glendon Phua (#20), Yeow Di Qiang (#7) and Toh Zuan Ming (#9).
Although he had already scored 2 goals in the second period, it was seemingly not enough for MJC Glendon Phua (#20) who continued his rampage with goals in the 00:34, 05:17 and 09:43 min in the third period. Kudos to ACJC Baoren (#15) for managing to volley in a goal in the 00:41 min in spite of MJC’s tight defense. Although MJC continues their campaign in style, credit has to be given to ACJC for breaking down the formidable defending champion MJC and showing that MJC is not as infallible as they seemed beforehand.
In the previous match, Temask Junior College (TJC) ended their season off with a bang. In their last match of the season, they created history by winning their first ever floorball game competitively with a 5-1 win over Innova Junior College (IJC). TJC #9 kicked off the game with a goal in the 6:07 min. Goals continue to flow in the second period with TJC #19 And #15 scoring in the 1:06 and 9:30 min respectively. The game ended with a beautiful third period with 2 more goals from #19 and #9 again. IJC’s only stab at winning the game was by #29 in the 14:16 min which was way too late.
This Wednesday, 16th July at Tampines Sports Hall:
MJC will face their greatest challenge up to date when they face rivals YJC to battle for the spot on the top of the league table at 1.30pm.
IJC and ACJC will play their last match against each other at 11am.
Writer’s Note: Unfortunately for these four teams, we are unable to provide neither the match reports nor photos of the games as we were not there. In fact, we went down to Republic Polytechnic (RP) with the intention to cover all 4 games only to find out that the matches had moved to Tampines Sports Hall (TSH). This was shock #1 for us. (And I was kicking myself for being such a ‘blur sotong’ and spending so much time on traveling. I kicked myself a second time when I found out about the scores… I missed two exciting matches! Details about the matches will be much appreciated!)
Then we traveled all the way down to TSH (in time for the two later matches, match reports will be up tomorrow!) to get shocked a second time. We were appalled at the state of the floorball court (if it can even be called a floorball court) and the lack of supporters seats. I really wonder how it will be like for the semi-finals and finals. I did suggest to the organizers to try getting the universities’ courts, (as the university students are on holidays now)so hopefully, if there is another change of venue, please inform us. Thanks.
P.S. More photos on the ACJC vs TJC are up here. And the photos on YJC vs IJC are up here. Help me name the unnamed players!
Editors Note: Names for the players mentioned in the updates will be very much appreciated.
Another mistake!
The the ACJC player who got the 2min penalty was (#14) not (#15) . sorry
sorry the first goal was not scored by ACJC (#15)
Dear Christy,
here’s what happened during the ACJC vs MJC match
1st period
The ACJC forwards started the match going full court pressure right from the first whistle . The MJC defenders had trouble at the start against the non stop pressure of their opponents but soon found ways to bring the ball up nonetheless. MJC started the period slow compared to their previous games. Even thou there were many shots from MJC ,none went in due to a tight ACJC defence. Having kept the past champions goaless thus far, ACJC pushed on the score the first goal in the game( scored by ACJC’s (#15) and breaking MJC’s clean sheet . The first period ending with the ACJC player’s morale at a all time high .
2nd period
The 2nd period was much more different from the 1st. Immediately after the whistle , MJC equalised when MJC”s captain Glendon Phua(#20)’s pass found MJC’s Winston Cheong (#21) at the blindside. Winston’s shot flew to the top rigthhand corner of the goal. 2 mins later MJC took the lead when an excellent throw out by MJC’s Lionel Boey saw Glendon Phua(#20) in a 1v1 situation with the keeper. He then volleyed the ball pass the keeper to bring MJC to 2 goals.
Despite being a goal down, ACJC fought on to try and reclaim their lead. Their attacks proved ineffective against the revived MJC defence. MJC s continued their scoring streak when MJC’s Yeow Di Qiang scored from the blind side from a pass by Winston Cheong (#21). MJC extended their lead further when Toh Zuan Ming(#9) slotted the ball between the ACJC keeper’s legs after a pass in from Harold Lim (#14). At the 12th min mark, ACJC had a chance to pull 1 back but a shot from ACJC’s Baoren(#15) hit the crossbar, a close shave for the MJC keeper. The 2nd period ended with a score of 5 -1 to ACJC after MJC’s Glendon Phua (#20) scored again from a throw out by Lionel Boey(#30).
The 3rd period proved to be a continuation of the 2nd. MJC’s Glendon Phua(#20) clinch his 3rd hat-trick of the tournament when he rocketed a drag shot into the top right hand corner of the ACJC goal 34 seconds into the 3rd period. However MJC’s celebration were cut short when ACJC’s Baoren(#15) volleyed a well placed volley into the bottom right corner of the MJC goal after winning the face off. MJC soon had a reason for cheer when their captain scored a rebound. MJC’s Glendon Phua(#20) whacked in a rebound from Calvin Chang(#17) shot which was just outside the box.
At the 9th min, ACJC’s (#15) was given a 2 min penalty was pushing a MJC player into the board. MJC capitalised on the power played and brought their lead to 6 goals when MJC’s Winston Cheong(#21) pass saw Glendon Phua (#20) open in the box to tap in his 5th goal of the match.
Despite being 6 goals down, ACJC still did not give up. Shouts of encouragement never ceased from the ACJC bench throughout the game. Perhaps these words of encouragement fuelled the ACJC [players to give their all regardless of the score.
The final whistle saw MJC win 8-2 against ACJC.

CONGRATS TJC!
grats tjc! well done!
keep up with the good work regarding the articles. haven’t had the luxury of watching the matches so these articles really help!
ah thank you floorballer! i appreciate that
hey christy, these are the updated timings according to SFA. 😉
http://www.sfa.sg/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=458&Itemid=118
Thanks for your great effort! 🙂
hey tjc: according to the referee match stats, it was no.19 who scored twice. You sure? Can someone confirm this?
to ajani: Oh no! my cover is blown! Well, the seat was a bit eye-catching I guess but it was the only place I could find for me to view the match properly. Yes, I would have love to see MJ concede the goals too… in fact I haven’t got to catch MJ in action despite all the hype. Dang!
About TSH, I just feel that its a pity that semis and finals are to be held there. How are the supporters going to support properly? Lighting was also a problem for Zhijia to take her pictures… Oh well, I hope they do find a better place for the semis and finals.
number 15 was the one who scored twice. not 19. for tjc.
If my guess isn’t wrong – Christy should have been sitting on the high chair, at the side where the MI and NY people placed their bags at yesterday. 🙂
I wish I arrived earlier to see MJ concede those goals – I mean, darn! The MJ have some good goalies – how could those goals have been possible?
And the boards are really terrible, with lighting too a problem – but perhaps it’s after one has been used to the luxury of RP that TSH seems terrible in contrast.
Ahhhh… I am sure they don’t recognize me – I have been keeping a pretty low profile. =) Thanks for your suggestions and help though, jan!
Hi floorballer and any other floorballers reading this,
Can you guys do us a favour by letting our writer – Christy – know the new fixtures/timings of the remaining floorball games?
Also Captains, can you please supply us with your team sheet after every match? Look out for the lovely Christy at the games! (Christy, you might want to wear a red top so that they can recognise you if they don’t already!)
This will help us to provide more accurate reporting of your games too. 🙂
thank you jack! you are a lifesaver! =)
To christy, to prevent you guys to make another wasted trip, match on 17th is change to 16th, first match (IJC vs ACJC) will be starting at 11am. so as all other matches will be brought forward earlier by an hour (:
Thank you floorballer, its readers like you that make my day. =)
to lemon tea: I have nothing against TSH courts. Though don’t you think that playing there will make it inconvenient for the supporters? Imagine cheering for your team in such an enclosed area and with badminton players playing next to you. It was so hard getting a place to sit.
And I believe that floorball deserves more recognition than this, surely there are better places to play floorball. If you went for Floorball POLite and IVP, you would know that there are much more courts for floorball to be played competitively. Its a pity not to try to get better courts.
don’t be too shock by the state of the court in tsh since it has just been renovated and it used to be much worse than this, with bits and pieces of wood chipping off the ground.
fyi, this court is where singapore floorball league (all divisions) is held and most of the floorballers “grew up” in tsh. i think there’s nothing wrong playing the semis and finals there.
thanks for writing all these articles on the floorball competition. we really appreciate it. 🙂
Congrats to TJC for winning their first match. You guys definitely deserve your win with your fighting spirit! 🙂
