Tampines Sports Hall, Wednesday, July 23, 2008 – Meridian Junior College (MJC) successfully defended their A Division Girls Floorball Champions title against fierce competitors Yishun Junior College (YJC) with a 3-2 win that saw both teams fighting on until the very last moment.
It was a tightly fought first period where both goalkeepers – MJC Pearlyn Lim (#55) and the YJC Nicole (#69) – should be both commended for holding the fort with their remarkable saves. With the two teams matched in skill, it was no wonder that the first period ended in a stalemate.
MJC started the second period with a bang, with MJC captain Farah Alsagoff (#4) sending a speedy pass to MJC Evelyn Kok (#13). The YJC goalkeeper was too distracted by Farah and allowed MJC Evelyn Kok (#13) to easily knock in the goal. This attacking duo repeated their feat minutes later. This time round, their roles were reversed. Evelyn sent a pass to Farah whose shot hit a YJC defender. Not discouraged, she deftly followed up the rebound and fired once more to hit the back of YJC’s net.
MJC captain Farah Alsagoff (#4) continued her scoring spree at the beginning of the third period, knocking in another spectacular goal to make it 3-0 for MJC. YJC, however replied swiftly this with an attacking duo of their own – Nur Syuhada (#17) and Amelene Choo (#2). Nur Syuhada send a quick pass to Isabel Choo who smacked in the shot so fast that there was no time for the MJC keeper to react. Sharon Lee (#6) of YJC then followed up with a stunning shot from the mid-court which baffled the MJC keeper once more.
MJC were now only leading 3-2 and YJC hopes rose.
As the seconds ticked down, the game became more aggressive with nobody knowing for sure how the game would end with YJC looking more dangerous with their swift attacks. Alas, it was too late for YJC despite their relentless search for an equalizer. Still, credit goes to YJC for never giving up and it was impressive to see how well they came back with two goals in the last period.
Just like how MJC captain Farah Alsagoff (#4) described MJC’s win as, “exciting, thrilling and indescribable,” – we have to agree that it was indeed one helluva game.
