A Singapore floorball team, the Labour Movement Floorball Club (LMFC) 2011, went to Melbourne, Australia and successfully defended their Australian Floorball Open title.
LMFC 2011 comprises 10 NTUC members and 8 nEbO members made their debut last year in Perth where they beat team Dingoes in the final to be crowned the champions for Australia. It was sweet victory, especially when they had lost twice to Dingoes in the qualifying group stages. LMFC 2011 have also won the Singapore Floorball League title for 10 consecutive years.
This year, the team had the pressure of defending their Australian title, along with the challenges of meeting opponents twice their size and playing in the coldest winter in Melbourne in decades. Led by their new coach, Dennis Lim, the team underwent vigorous court, physical and simulation trainings before embarking on this competition.
In the group stage, LMFC 2011 drew with Emus WA (aka Dingoes) and then lost to them in the second match. During the semi-finals, LMFC 2011 again lost to Emus WA but nudged their way to the final after beating Vikings. They were to meet Emus WA a fourth time.
Undaunted, the team prepared themselves mentally and physically for the final battle against their rival team.
It was nail-biting game. Emus WA managed to net a goal first from a penalty. LMFC 2011 followed with an equaliser from a wrap-around goal by Stella Chia and the final winning goal was scored by Jasmine Giam. Even during the last few seconds, both teams fought hard for the ball, causing tense moments for the goalkeepers on both sides. LMFC 2011 eventually won 3-2 to repeat their title win of last year.
LMFC 2011 coach Dennis Lim's words before the match rang true. "All those qualifying matches don't count," he said. "It's this final battle that counts and we will hit them where it hurts the most!"
Indeed, just like last year where most did not give LMFC 2011 a chance in the final, the team proved that their hunger to win and their ability.
Three members of the LMFC 2011 team made the All-Star team: goalkeeper Carmen Teo, defender Jaime Cheong and center Martha Quek.

oh wow. I’d love to see her in action. That would be my inspiration 😀
yeah, cause she was in Finland playing in one of the divisions there for the past 7 months and only came back recently so I guess she wanted to come back to coach RJ, and it was definitely worth it seeing that RJ had a great win.
heard that sometime ago she was ranked 3rd in the world and the first 2 were guys! (guess that means the ranking was combined at the time)
And yup, may floorball continue to gain popularity and take a more significant spot in Singapore in time to come!
wow. She is really a dedicated coach.
Back to the focus here though – I am glad Singapore floorball girls are doing so well!
