Pictures and story by Marvin Lowe.
Bishan Sports Hall, Friday, 18 July 2008 – Joey Tam from Raffles Girls’ School emerged as the individual all-round Champion in the recent Inter-School National Artistic Gymnastic Championships. She finished first with a total of 53.8 points, while fellow national squad teammate, Rachel Yip from Methodist Girls’ School, finished a close second with 52.75 points. Nicole Lim who is also from MGS finished third. MGS also clinched the overall championship title.
In the Artistic Gymnastic competition, all competitors compete in four different elements: Uneven Bars, Balance Beam, Floor Exercise and Vault. Of these four elements, Joey came out tops for two of them, clinching gold in the Balance Beam and Uneven Bars. She also claimed a silver in the Floor Exercise. Meanwhile, Rachel Yip clinched the gold in the Floor Exercise, a silver in Uneven Bars and a bronze for the Balance Beam.
Joey shared that she was thrilled to have won the all-round title given the tough competition. She credits her victory to her coach, Ms Yuan Kexia, who has been a source of inspiration for her and for being a great coach. She also thanked her mom for being there for her and supporting her and is looking forward to the challenge of representing Singapore in the near future.
Hi,
Does anyone knows where Joey Tham train or who is her coach? Joey Tham is in RGPS or secondary? I would like to contact her coach for gym training for my girls. Thank you.
Wow that chloe chan is tall. What’s her height?
hello, pass-er by here. I am a pri 6 student and I join chinese dance in my primary school. I can only do front flip which i practice by my instructor for the SYF last year. I just wanted to know if I can join gymnastic the next year, 2010, when i am in Sec 1.
I found this article online and it was really helpful. Now I see that good gymnastics is alive and well in Singapore!
Do you all have contact info for your gyms? One of my gymnasts is relocating from the USA to Singapore and we need to find her a good gym that does the upper levels.
My email is cagymcoach@aol.com
Thank you.
thanks. it didn’t hurt at all… haha. and my routine obviously isn’t flawless! i just wasn’t myself that day but i enjoyed the first day:P
Hi Eleanor,
Thanks for popping by. Hope you don’t mind the photo. Anyways, well done on a flawless routine as well. I don’t remember you falling at all during the actual routine. It was really courageous of you to pick yourself up after that fall during practice. I noticed you were tearing? It must have hurt quite abit. But you steadied yourself and gave your best. I think that was the best part of it all. So, well done and congrats!
haha just got to noe abt the pic today! at least i pulled it off for the real thing:)
to Junwei, ur strong rational in putting the pic up its fine with me. just find it weird to have all the pic with gers in beautiful poses or executing routines but ONLY this one a fall.
it is just my 2 cents worth but spare a tot for the girl, do u think she want ppl to rem this incident all the time?
marvin, it will be great for her if u also include another of her pic that she pulled off. it does not matter if she wins, but we athelets always hope ppl to rem what we have put in, n not the moment we fall.
quit arguing and thank les
Hi yo,
I don’t think we will remove the photo. After all, the caption has stated that it was a practice run. Even if it’s not, what’s wrong with showing that we are all humans? There’s great character in the picture and we can all see her genuine expression, reflecting the hard work she has put in.
Sports is not all about winning. We showcase the people who win, and we also showcase the people who fall. It’s not to humiliate them, but to show everyone the amount of hard work they have put in. Even when they fall, they stand up strong and continue!
Hi Yo,
Thank you for your concern, I will leave that decision to the editor. If you were there, you would remember although she fell very hard during the practice round, she was even in tears. However, when it came to the actual round, she actually pulled it off smoothly! Another suggestion I have, would be to put up another photo of Eleanor to tell the complete story, that she succeeded in making it work in the end. How about that?=)
Dawn: Thanks!=p
Jesss: Sure thing, let us know when it will be and we will be there!=)
hi but i would like to say that it was only a practice run, and i guess you must be eleanor herself because you do not like that picture.
may i suggest that Eleanor Chua’s picture be taken down. i think it is not very gracious for us to put it up. I know it is real, but no one wanna be reminded of our mistakes, it is not a moment that she will wanna remember. lets just appreciate the good performences and encourage those who…..did not perform to expectation?
Thanks
hey i suggest that you should also cover the trampoline competition:D maybe next year. since this year’s is already over.
Awesome pictures, Marvin. Gymnastics is really one of the most photogenic sports.
