Singapore Basketball Centre, Friday, August 1, 2008 – Talk about a game going down to the wire.
Woodlands Ring Secondary staged a remarkable comeback in the final few seconds of regulation time to pip Hwa Chong Institution 53-52 in a National C Division Boys Basketball Group A match.
In a previous post, I had written about Benjamin Ng possibly breaking the National U-17 pole vault record with a 4.30m effort. However, a kind reader has pointed out a discrepancy that it is stated in the record books and result sheets of the National Schools Track and Field Championships that Solomon Tan vaulted 4.35m in 2001 in the Boys B Division competition. So which is the actual national U-17 mark?
Top scorer of the game, Woodlands Ring’s #10 Aldric Hu, may have amassed a game-high 32 points, but he saved his best for last when he scored a crucial three-pointer as time expired to clinch victory for his team.
The result was left in doubt though, as Hwa Chong immediately lodged a protest regarding the long one second it took for the player to make the shot.
The Hwa Chong players had earlier mistakenly celebrated a win when time expired, but the referee ruled that there was one second left on the shot clock. And that was all that was needed for Woodlands Ring to snatch a win.
If the results are ratified after the arbitration committee meets, Woodlands Ring will qualify together with Dunman Secondary, who had earlier beaten Catholic High 67-42. Both Hwa Chong and Catholic High would then fail to qualify for the next round from Group A.
Hwa Chong will be left rueing their chances as they had led 25-19 going into the second half on the back of fine performances from Ronghao (#13) and Laisheng (#14) who scored 16 and 14 points respectively. They only just failed to hold on to their lead in the end.

how about your coach?
dont talk about sportsmanship here
juz respect it dude… whrs ur sportmanship… refree is aways the biggest in the game… no use arguing
hey 10.its not that last ball only.
we are trying to say the whole game.
and that may refer to what you were talking about.
(the refs awarding the balls to hc)
WRS Bball team just rocks!
Jiayou all the way!
Get the National Champion!
JIAYOU! JIAYOU! JIAYOU!
Refree is the fairest of them all :DD
FuLian jiayou! :]
agreed! referees are kayu indeed
the referees have eyes and they did not see number 4 trying to save the ball and TOUCHED IT?? THEY FRIGGING LET WRS START FROM HCI BASELINE?WAD ON EARTH IS THIS??
erm if i’ve angered anyone or whoever i sincerely apologise but u gotta respect the refree dudes or babes losl… do you all seriously tink tt the refree oni help us? i rmb clearly tt we were defendin i did not touch the ball for at least 3 times and the refree gave the ball to hci and so… stop blamin the refree…
I think that WRS didnt play that well that day, they should have led HCI by 10+ over marks by how they are performing the few previous games, they can beat HCI. But just that during that day, they did not perform up to mark. REALLY!! WRS IS A GOOD TEAM! They deserve to win this game!
i think it’s the official’s fault. there was once when WRS’s ball went out, and the timer stopped the clock about 2 or 3 seconds late. hwa chong could have scored and won! they really deserve the win over WRS. i admire #4 of hwa chong! very aggressive. (:
Zoners referee kayu , but i cant believe nationals are too
The 1 sec was so long , and long enough for someone to pass the ball to him and the time for him to step 1 step back to 3 point line and shot , but not my business anyway =)) cos not my school
yeah, its quite unfair larhhs actuallie, but i feel tat if hci reallie deserve the win, why they can actuallie giv woodlands ring a chance to shoot a 3pointer and wats more, allow him to score? well, if they realie deserve the won they must be a better team and to prove they’re better, why didnt they prove it by nt allowing woodlands ring score tat 3pointer? you guys see. but perhaps its reallie unfair, but i still ting it is unfair and injustice if the clock lags the final second larhhs. tats my opinion no offense^^.
What perfect refereeing system in singapore. You get 3 pointers added on to the score board even when the buzzer was sounded.
Lets all applaud warmly to the referee’s decision. He knows how to contradict the buzzer. Isnt that great? Finally we have some guys who have some neurological problems that they can be 1 second laggier in their minds. And the best part is, they’re referees.
hwa chong rocks larrr..
this match is really unfair to hwachong. the refree should be more alert and not make such a mistake. it was really sad for hc.nvm jiayouS
Ref’s these days… Sigh, why bother working as a ref when you guys are so biased..
agreed
I AM NOT FROM HWACHONG BUT DEN I GT SEE THE MATCH ALSO. HCI SHUDDAF WON ONE LA. THE REFEREES GOT LAG TIME ON CLOCK. EVERYBODY ALSO SAY ITS NOT FAIR. HWACHONG DE PROTEST SHOULD BE SUCCESSFUL
woodlands ring should not have won. when no.13 threw the ball full court, no.4 touched the ball but it unfortunately spun out. at that particular moment, 2++ secs had passed since the throw, and there were only 1.8 secs remaining. however, the wrs coach blatantly claimed that no.4 did not touch the ball, and the clock should be back to 4 secs, and very unfortunately, the referees believed him, and switched the clock back to 4 secs. it is indubitably dubitable that the wrs did not see no.4 touch the ball. however, during that 2-point lead and at a critical situation, we were all concentrating on the match and did not bother much. however to our utmost dismay, when the ball was thrown in and when a wrs player shot the ball frm the perimeter, the referees, in another horrid blunder did not start the clock till they awoke from their stupor, which was another vital 1 sec wasted and when the ball hit the rim. and hit out by us when 0.smthg secs were left. elated by our “distant” victory, we thought we had won, but the match was not over, despite the numerous blunders the referees have had made. with the ball thrown in, no.10 made a swish frm the 3-point line. we could have accepted this loss, however, we did not lose fair and square. the mistakes made by the referees cost us a well-deserved victory, and maybe wrs, if we were to play a rematch. at that moment, we vehemently protested as stated, as we felt that we were dealt injustice
