Singapore Basketball Centre, Friday, August 1, 2008 – Talk about a game going down to the wire.
Woodlands Ring Secondary staged a remarkable comeback in the final few seconds of regulation time to pip Hwa Chong Institution 53-52 in a National C Division Boys Basketball Group A match.
In a previous post, I had written about Benjamin Ng possibly breaking the National U-17 pole vault record with a 4.30m effort. However, a kind reader has pointed out a discrepancy that it is stated in the record books and result sheets of the National Schools Track and Field Championships that Solomon Tan vaulted 4.35m in 2001 in the Boys B Division competition. So which is the actual national U-17 mark?
Top scorer of the game, Woodlands Ring’s #10 Aldric Hu, may have amassed a game-high 32 points, but he saved his best for last when he scored a crucial three-pointer as time expired to clinch victory for his team.
The result was left in doubt though, as Hwa Chong immediately lodged a protest regarding the long one second it took for the player to make the shot.
The Hwa Chong players had earlier mistakenly celebrated a win when time expired, but the referee ruled that there was one second left on the shot clock. And that was all that was needed for Woodlands Ring to snatch a win.
If the results are ratified after the arbitration committee meets, Woodlands Ring will qualify together with Dunman Secondary, who had earlier beaten Catholic High 67-42. Both Hwa Chong and Catholic High would then fail to qualify for the next round from Group A.
Hwa Chong will be left rueing their chances as they had led 25-19 going into the second half on the back of fine performances from Ronghao (#13) and Laisheng (#14) who scored 16 and 14 points respectively. They only just failed to hold on to their lead in the end.

i think that HW should had won the game. it is extremely not fair at all. the refree no eyes. cannot make the right or wrong decision. NOOB REFREE , REFREE GAI YUU!!!!
LOL HCsupporter. If I were you, I would have said the same thing cos I want my school to win! HAHAHAhAHA
not bad ah, ni hui jiang ying wen wo hai yi wei ni hui qu chou yan
Referees are not the king of the court, adelbert is.
I don’t care what skills or inability HC is lacking or whatever challenge they will face in future. The fact in front of me is the result was injustice to HC and they will have my full support as a witness or anything I can help to fight back the justice to them.
oh ya players and supports and visitors. Shall we stop arguing and just wait patiently for the outcome??
Lets play cos we love the game. dun let the adults and their motives side track us from our passion for the games
i agree that referee job is difficult.
I also respect the hardwork put in by both teams.
i repect HCI’s right to protect and leaving it to the committee to decide rather than fight it out on the sport.
BUT ULTIMATELY THE REFEREES SHOULD START TO REFLECT HOW THEY R “CONTRIBUTING” TO SINGAPORE SCH B BALL. BY THEIR SO CALL BEING VERY VERY PROFESSIONAL…
Just want to say something about the referees, they are also human, yes it was a very long 1 second, but even in the NBA there are mis-calls by the referee. Unfortunately at our school level, there isnt enough monetary resources for us to employ 3 referees on top of table officials as well as to have a full video crew to provide video for instant analysis like in the NBA. However all these experiences (good or bad) all just serve to further enrich the players’ careers. Like I like to say, if you lose by 1pt, you probably did yourself enough injustice earlier on to deserve it.
HCI is a strong team, however their glaring inability to handle the opponent’s fullcourt press killed them, they have to learn to solve that problem as it is more pressing (no pun intended) than trying to deal with referees who are a factor that lies beyond the team’s control. This problem has been obvious since the zonal rounds and even if HCI does get the appeal through and makes it into the next round, the face an uphill task against even more teams that are able to play Woodland ring’s fullcourt press at an even higher intensity.
HW did very well and they were leading the game all the way to the end and I think they really really DESERVE to win. To me the extension of the last one second was UNFAIRNESS to HW.
I was there to watch the game. It was a great game and Hwa Chong did so well but there was so many mistakes made in that last four secs. Especially the extension of the last one second which was unnecessary. And furthermore the time expired before the shot was made. Though I agree referee has the final say but I strongly believe when we see something is not right and fair, we have to support the truth and even fight for it to return the justice back to Hwa Chong.
coach? u tok to me abt my coach.. c”mon i juz said abt sportmanship respect it… we juz won so? if ur not down wif it juz let us see u in the finals and we will compete… wif all due respect
and another thing to add, the shot will count as long as the ball leaves the shooter’s hand before the buzzer sounded
I did not watch the match and neither do i know what really happened during that last few seconds. But judging from what I read, I just wanna tell some of you a little info on the shot clock. From the baseline, the ref is only supposed to start the clock when the pass is MADE and caught by the person receiving the pass. So, assuming this player A starts the ball at the baseline and tried to pass the ball to B, the clock will start counting down the moment B touches the ball. If B or any1 else on court failed to touch this pass, then the clock will not move at all. I’m not sure what really happened, but maybe this might explain why the last 1 sec seem so long??
In my point of view , it is always easier to write off a team or to name favorites on paper but when it comes down to the real action it is very difficult to judge whose the better team. Refree’s play a part and you cannot actually fault them all the time because from their point of view it is usually different from what you all see at the sides. They need to run and follow the action and then do the best they can to judge the situation.
In the luck department , I guess I can cooly say that HCI was just not having any that day.

even though im a WRS supporter, i believe that WRS played well in this game. i was there to watch the match & its really a very nice game. i’ve to agree with WRS #10 that the refree’s the biggest in the game & what the refree said was fianl. & it has nothing to do with WRS coach. overall, WRS played well & they deserve to win this match.
