Singapore Basketball Centre, Friday, August 1, 2008 – Talk about a game going down to the wire.
Woodlands Ring Secondary staged a remarkable comeback in the final few seconds of regulation time to pip Hwa Chong Institution 53-52 in a National C Division Boys Basketball Group A match.
In a previous post, I had written about Benjamin Ng possibly breaking the National U-17 pole vault record with a 4.30m effort. However, a kind reader has pointed out a discrepancy that it is stated in the record books and result sheets of the National Schools Track and Field Championships that Solomon Tan vaulted 4.35m in 2001 in the Boys B Division competition. So which is the actual national U-17 mark?
Top scorer of the game, Woodlands Ring’s #10 Aldric Hu, may have amassed a game-high 32 points, but he saved his best for last when he scored a crucial three-pointer as time expired to clinch victory for his team.
The result was left in doubt though, as Hwa Chong immediately lodged a protest regarding the long one second it took for the player to make the shot.
The Hwa Chong players had earlier mistakenly celebrated a win when time expired, but the referee ruled that there was one second left on the shot clock. And that was all that was needed for Woodlands Ring to snatch a win.
If the results are ratified after the arbitration committee meets, Woodlands Ring will qualify together with Dunman Secondary, who had earlier beaten Catholic High 67-42. Both Hwa Chong and Catholic High would then fail to qualify for the next round from Group A.
Hwa Chong will be left rueing their chances as they had led 25-19 going into the second half on the back of fine performances from Ronghao (#13) and Laisheng (#14) who scored 16 and 14 points respectively. They only just failed to hold on to their lead in the end.

hey can your even do a 1 sec crucial three-pointer? grow up man! WRS students are diciplined people!
I think we should look at the entire game from a neutral point of view, yes there were many missed calls throughout the game, but if you had seen the officiating of the zonal games you would realise that this is the normal standard of refereeing. I would also like to see a higher standard of refereeing in Singapore however the current situation is such, there is little we can do about it.
These referees are doing this out of passion, the tiny amount of money that they get for their job is more like an allowance than a salary. Furthermore, the refereeing for the bulk of the game wasnt biased to any one side. There were an equal amount of missed calls for both HCI as well as Woodlands Ring. Furthermore, if you were really paying attention, the most of the missed calls were by the younger referee and not the more experienced one who made the final call.
We all make mistakes, let it rest. Can we just await the final verdict of the appeal and not try to make the referees feel any worse.
Are you saying that no professional sport result has ever been overturned? Suppose it was the so called final for whatever soccer game it is and the ref gave a penalty for NO reason and the opposing team subsequemtly lost the match. Its the same here, HCI will not qualify for the next round because of this loss, its a call that cost them the season!
Refree’s rules:
#01 I’m always right
#02 If I’m wrong, refer back to the first rule
not one.but many bad calls.
HCsupporter, please stop crying over splilt milk. In soccer, refs make so many blunders even in the EPL and mind you, EPL is the most popular football league in the world. True, the refs in the EPL do get suspended at times but the result still stands.
What do you want the referee to suffer? A loss of job because of one bad call?
hey wrs #10.one fine day, when your school loses because of a such blunders by a ref,you will understand.its not like we really want to blame them.but dont you tink that the blunder was abit too much?
WRS#10 : cause you’re the one who won cause of the refs mistakes thats why you ain’t complaining . LOL!
and i tell you we wouldnt, we wunt behave even to the likes of you… everyting oso ref fault ref fault get a life man… start growin up
Don’t pretend you guys would not do the same thing if it were the other way round.
But the thing is, we are not refs. They are trained professionals, we depened on them to do their job right. Sure everyone makes mistakes, but 5 of them missing a glaring error in the LAST second of play? Why are they even there?
yea agreed if u kip complainin y dun you try goin out thr and ref a game… we’ll see how many players nonono its how many skuls will compain bt ur stupendous calls…
nono u all got it all wrong. we have nothing against wrs, but only against the referees and their blunders. if we had lost fair and square, we would most graciously accept it, however, this was a result not from our own play, but the referee’s, which clearly explains why we are protesting vehemently, and hope that our appeal goes through
yawns~ blame the refs for all these. then why not all the fags here go on the court and be a ref. players out there will have your utmost fairly judge calls. 🙂
We respect the results only if it was a fair play. We don’t respect blindly.
The referee is not the king of the court. They are just like a police who guard the court to make sure no one play against the rules, stop the foul play and ensure a fair play throughtout the game. During the game there were technical mistakes need to be oorrected on the spot but he didn’t, he added one more second which no one understood why and he counted the last shot by WR which should not be….he was assisting a CRIME. He does not qualify as a professional referee.
We should be encouraged by the fighting spirit and mental strength shown by WRS. We should respect the decisions made by the referee and the final results, that’s the exciting part of a sports event. Never till the last second, should you give up! Let’s encourage WRS and move on from this incident. I think WRS deserve to get through and will eventually fight against all odds! Don’t you think so? WRS Rox!
WRS win means WRS win….. what done cannot be undone…. whats the use of talking about all these then?
i have been suspecting if singapore’s referee are actually well trained. for “not-so-important” matches, they turn a blind eye and ignore alot of fouls. during the nationals, good calls are seen. please,BAS, review the standard of the referees
Yes HCI won the game but all the referees there were blind or pretend blind….the buzzer sounded and time expired before the ball left the player’s hand and the referees counted the shot…that’s was incredible. I wonder their professional standards.
