Singapore Basketball Centre, Friday, August 1, 2008 – Talk about a game going down to the wire.
Woodlands Ring Secondary staged a remarkable comeback in the final few seconds of regulation time to pip Hwa Chong Institution 53-52 in a National C Division Boys Basketball Group A match.
In a previous post, I had written about Benjamin Ng possibly breaking the National U-17 pole vault record with a 4.30m effort. However, a kind reader has pointed out a discrepancy that it is stated in the record books and result sheets of the National Schools Track and Field Championships that Solomon Tan vaulted 4.35m in 2001 in the Boys B Division competition. So which is the actual national U-17 mark?
Top scorer of the game, Woodlands Ring’s #10 Aldric Hu, may have amassed a game-high 32 points, but he saved his best for last when he scored a crucial three-pointer as time expired to clinch victory for his team.
The result was left in doubt though, as Hwa Chong immediately lodged a protest regarding the long one second it took for the player to make the shot.
The Hwa Chong players had earlier mistakenly celebrated a win when time expired, but the referee ruled that there was one second left on the shot clock. And that was all that was needed for Woodlands Ring to snatch a win.
If the results are ratified after the arbitration committee meets, Woodlands Ring will qualify together with Dunman Secondary, who had earlier beaten Catholic High 67-42. Both Hwa Chong and Catholic High would then fail to qualify for the next round from Group A.
Hwa Chong will be left rueing their chances as they had led 25-19 going into the second half on the back of fine performances from Ronghao (#13) and Laisheng (#14) who scored 16 and 14 points respectively. They only just failed to hold on to their lead in the end.

Excuse me, the fact that I am a ex-hwachongnian doesn’t mean I am Hwa Chong supporter! Obviously, I support WRSS, I did not deny about it. But I pity HC because I saw WRSS#10 released the ball AFTER the buzzer sounded. That’s why I left my comment to console the HC team. Btw, (for those who did not watch the match) the video clip about the shot clock is not accurate cos there was additional 2 sec given for a mistake made by the table officials earlier which was not shown on the clock! the 2 sec was only shown in the officials’ stop watch…
mai lame lurhs . say so much also no use . lose jiu shi lose liao . as some people say , a ball is round . anything can happen in court . count themselve unlucky lorhs . they dont know how to hold the ball and let the time past arhs ? why must say WRS until like that . their school 1st in north zone lerhs . obviously the standard is there lurhs -.-
hwachong should have won… so obvious
WRS won…. =_=… HCI lost…..=_=
wahsai siah hwa chong poor ting. liddat so obvious evidence oso nt successful appeal. pathetic hci…
actually I think hwachong should have won. such 1 point wins from such controversial matters are uncalled for, and Alric was really lucky with his 3 pointer shot, and as proven, with time as well. Hwa chong is a great team. so after this comments, to Mr Ex-hwa chongnian, do you think i’m from HCI or WRSS?
so that means that hci can go nxt round RITE? WRS NOW CANOT GO RITE? CUZ THEY LOST HCI RITE?RITE?RITE?RITE?RITE?RITE?RITE?RITE?RITE?RITE?RITE?RITE?
LOL again
hahaha! lol…hahaha! lol hahaha! lol hahaha! lol. Lets be civilized now. I’ve seen the pic n i dun tink wrs gt much to say now…aww too bad
ilovexue chuan fr hcincc

Hwa Chong vs Woodlands Ring Buzzerbeater?
The guy did not release the ball when the shot clock showed 0 seconds and buzzer was sounded

btw i bet th “ex-hwachongian” is some wrs in disguise? LOL!
joker siah
but i think wrs will graciously accept defeat if its th other way round right? even if they lose cos of ref mistake or shots tht shdnt count, they’ll always be angels and be gracious in defeat no matter how unfair it is. that’s just my view, i think wrs are such wonderful pple tht 1 fine day if they lose they will nvr ever blame referees or complain abt fouls, in fact they will tell th refs “good job” if they have a bad call, and praise opponents after they lose. such wonderful, gracious, people, wow.
wonder wht noises will wrs make if they r th ones tht hve their season scrwd cos of some bad call?
hopefully will reach a compromise abt de appeal lor, since its general view tht th buzzer beater neva shot in time
btw horhs so did derh appeal succeeded?i doubt so right?
Yes WR did a crucial three pointer unfortunately it was after the buzzer sounded and the time expired. So the key point here is the shot should not be counted. This is the rule of the court which I think everyone understands. It’s not necessary to punish the referees though they all missed that important moment but the committee should investigate this case and overturn the result if necessary.
Hopefully, WRSS can win Deming Sec tmr so that HC will feel much better…..
I think wrss deserve to win the game cos there was one point of time(8 sec left)the ball went out of bound, but the table official stopped the clock only 2 sec later (6 sec left)(Really slow reaction!). So, if the official did not make this mistake,WRSS (with these 2 more sec)would have won this game without so much controvery! And the HC players and supporters will not be feeling so upset! This is LIFE! got to face it and take it……
Again, back to the question.
What punishment do you want the ref to suffer? And how will that make you feel better if that is the case?
And do you really think the result would be overturned?
