Singapore Basketball Centre, Friday, August 1, 2008 – Talk about a game going down to the wire.
Woodlands Ring Secondary staged a remarkable comeback in the final few seconds of regulation time to pip Hwa Chong Institution 53-52 in a National C Division Boys Basketball Group A match.
In a previous post, I had written about Benjamin Ng possibly breaking the National U-17 pole vault record with a 4.30m effort. However, a kind reader has pointed out a discrepancy that it is stated in the record books and result sheets of the National Schools Track and Field Championships that Solomon Tan vaulted 4.35m in 2001 in the Boys B Division competition. So which is the actual national U-17 mark?
Top scorer of the game, Woodlands Ring’s #10 Aldric Hu, may have amassed a game-high 32 points, but he saved his best for last when he scored a crucial three-pointer as time expired to clinch victory for his team.
The result was left in doubt though, as Hwa Chong immediately lodged a protest regarding the long one second it took for the player to make the shot.
The Hwa Chong players had earlier mistakenly celebrated a win when time expired, but the referee ruled that there was one second left on the shot clock. And that was all that was needed for Woodlands Ring to snatch a win.
If the results are ratified after the arbitration committee meets, Woodlands Ring will qualify together with Dunman Secondary, who had earlier beaten Catholic High 67-42. Both Hwa Chong and Catholic High would then fail to qualify for the next round from Group A.
Hwa Chong will be left rueing their chances as they had led 25-19 going into the second half on the back of fine performances from Ronghao (#13) and Laisheng (#14) who scored 16 and 14 points respectively. They only just failed to hold on to their lead in the end.

wanqing,u dont throw the ball with the same strength, angle and speed everytime =).and that comes with luck =)
Dominic, I’d like this controversy to end as much as you would. We’ve acknowledged several times that we recognized that the decision is final. I’ve wished Woodlands well in the second round and I am sincere when I say that. But if you are going to accuse HCI fans of whining, then least get your facts straight in doing so. After the first missed shot by Woodlands and the rebound by Hwa Chong and the call on the line, the game clock had expired. The ref then added one second to the shot clock and recommenced the game. Yes, that is his discretion to do so and I am not disputing that. But you cannot say that the shot would have been good if the ref had added one second to the clock when in fact he DID add one second to the clock. Yes, it’s over. If you you want this controversy to die, then let it die!
As a neutral, the decision is already made, stop whining. As said by the ref, due to mishandling of the time there is an additional 1 sec, so if u were to add a second to it, the shot would have counted, as the ball had already left his hand after that. Well, strive on WRS, and HCI, better luck next year. You cannot discredit that guys last second shot can you. Turn around and look at it, the failure of HCI to keep their composure for the last second and maybe they forgot abt the additional one sec was the reasons as to why they lost the match. Well, it cant be overturned anyway. Well, you guys will win the A division for sure.
AGREED
hey gwen. this is my reply to you. :@
i support neither of the teams. and let me tell ya this. both teams to be able to come to this stage, means both teams are of certain standard. you are juz being bias here, saying that WRS should get in the 2nd round. wad about HCI?> it is simply unfair. bcos they REALLY won. if you bothered to look at the youtube video, it showed that WRS player threw the ball in AFTEr the buzzer went off.
so, HCI should win this match.
And why dont you just realise that we are not appealing to go to the next round? we know that the decision is final but we’re just proving that it was a bad call.
why dont just HCI accept the fact that they have lose? WRS are in to the 2nd round & HCI are out. jut blame HCI that their lucks are not there. WRS is a really good team and deserve to get in to the 2nd round. everyone would make a mistakes even refrees. so dont blame he refrees.
all the best WRS [:
The final six seconds of the Hwa Chong – Woodlands Ring Division C playoff game can be seen here. This is from the video evidence not permitted by the appeals committee.

Anyone who saw the game will know that the last 6 seconds were confusing, particularly if you tried to make sense of the game from the game clock. I’ve added title screens to explain the action as I understand it.
I doubt this video will end the controversy, but at least people who weren’t there can understand what the controversy was about.
AS i did not watched the match, i think it is fair to me to make a comment as i dont support anybody from the two teams.I knew this news when my coach was telling us.I really think that HCI should win.Lets see if aldric hu can do that again with 1 sec with the same situation and the players there too.If he cant then is just too bad.
i think wrss was a really geat team in n zone a time when vs north vista they had a well plan trap to trap north vista 2 tall centre each standing 180 plus and even won press high
hey,WRSS,dun care about the comment,since u made it to the 2nd round,work hard~ jyjy~
take this stupid thing to the supreme court lah. bloody hell still talking about this. you are not the only team that lost because of a “BAD” call by a ref. even nba refs do that too. are you gonna fly all the way to the states to f the ref upside down inside out?
wow.so you want the last 4 sec of the video right?
lets get hc to post it.
and you will know you were wrong.
Anyway, the case was closed. WRSS has entered the 2nd round. HC basketballers, you have tried your best but your luck was not there! Dont be too upset, buck up and train harder! Hope to see you guys in national top 8/ top4 next year! 加油ï¼Â
If possible, show the video clip from the point before the ball starts from the baseline! You will then realise that you are wrong!
Sigh……The fact is that even b4 wrss#10 touch the ball, ie even b4 his teammate start the ball from baseline, the shot clock is 0! That male referee signalled 1 more sec added in stop watch cos the scoreboard couldn’t reset to 1 sec! Pls lah! get your fact right! not me!
it was shown luh.
diao.-,-.
the 1 sec was shown on the shot clock.
get yr facts right.
Sorry for some wrong info, it was 1 sec, not 2 sec! My apology…
coming this far , it is all mainly about skill , not about luck . do you think refree so easy to be . if every team lose blame refree , who would want to be refree in future ?!
GO WRS !
dont be affected by all this comment . JIAYOUS and ALL THE BEST ((:
erm..since the result is already out,we should juz respect the decision?
