Beijing, Friday, August 8, 2008 – In what was probably an accident, table tennis player Li Jia Wei was spotted on television touching the stadium track with the Singapore flag. The 27-year-old Jia Wei had volunteered to carry the flag and the honour was not denied her. The unfortunate thing now is that it was captured on camera and now there will be the inevitable backlash. Or will there?

It is just an accident! No big deal lah. You know that she is a girl and the flag is damn heavy. At least she won a silver medal for Singapore. So… let the matter rest!

Please lah! it is only a few inches on the ground, it is not obvious..i did not even notice it until someone told me. Give it a rest
hey wats the big deal?im sure she didnt mean it..she’s a girl u know.the flag is heavy! anw she won a silver fer singapore! she’s so sad when she didnt get another medal fer e singles..n we shouldnt kip saying dat she is nt singaporean, she IS a singaporean, she is representing us! all dat matters dat she has done her best n we should give her support^^
thanks to singaporeans who knows how to respect ppl=)
For goodness sake. She has already helped our country to win a silver medal after 48 long years. Enough of these; she has worked so hard for our country and she deserves a break and a reward. It may be disrespectful, but some things are just better to be left buried and forgotton and this is definitely one of those things. She may not be born in our country, but she has stayed here since 15 years ago and has won so much awards for our country and herself. What more is there to say? She has let our flag touch the stadium track, but so? Her team has raised the country’s flag in the award ceremony the second time after 48 years, and that is what really matters. Do not discrimminate her just because she is not native to our country, I am proud of her, proud of Singapore, and proud of her deeds: to pit herself against childhood friends and people from her hometown is not easy.
She’s a beautiful woman, thats all I can say!
Its not her flag.
I’m amazed that people treat this so lightly. If we were brought up in a country where people did anything they could to the national flag, then I would understand. However, we treat our flag with the utmost of respect.
Some accidents are meant to be forgiven but others, well…let’s just say that if this one is left to be ignored, there will definitely be other people who would take this ignorance to another level. There will be backlash..I’m certain.
Why? It’s just an accident! I am convinced of her patriotism and her efforts to win a medal for Singapore. I prefer that to any bureacratic small-mindedness about flags.. Better to focus on the big picture. Flags protocols are less important.
its nt about giving her a break or not. allowin the flag 2 touch the ground is just disrespectful to the country. the flag is seen as a “sacred” object and u cant even dispose it in any way u want. dropping e flag is lke “bad luck”. even hanging the flag upside down or in e wrong way is disrespectful. mayb jiawei didn realise it la. but she shud be mre careful. i think many pple didnt realise it, and the media didn blow up a storm bcos of this. otherwise pple(who noe e significance of her doing) r sure going 2 make noise. judgin tt she’s not born in sg and all those crap.
but good luck 2 her! lets hope she can bring back a medal for sg!
Give her a break!
