Beijing, Wednesday, August 13, 2008 – The Singapore men’s table tennis team beat Canada 3-0 this afternoon at the Beijing Olympics.

Gao Ning lost the second game 4-11 but eventually beat Zhang Peng of Canada 13-11, 4-11, 11-6, 11-9.

Teammate Yang Zi then took on Pradeeban Peter-Paul in a tight second singles that went five games. Yang Zi lost the first game 8-11 but won the next two 11-4, 11-6. However, Peter-Paul hauled Yang Zi by winning the fourth 11-8 to set up the decider where the latter eventually prevailed 11-7.

Cai Ziao Li and Yang Zi then teamed up to beat Shen Qiang and Peter-Paul 3-1 in the first doubles (11-9, 11-7, 13-11, 11-5) to confirm the team win.

The team will take on Croatia tomorrow morning in their next group match. Croatia went down 0-3 to Germany in the other group match.
