Beijing, Wednesday, August 13, 2008 – The Singapore women paddlers kick-started their quest for a medal by beating the United States of America (USA) 3-0 in the team event. Singapore, playing in Group B alongside the USA, Nigeria and the Netherlands, took just over an hour to beat their opponents.
In the first singles, Wang Yue Gu of Singapore beat Gao Jun of the USA 11-6, 7-11, 11-8, 11-4 in 39 minutes. Feng Tianwei, likewise, surrendered the second game, but eventually defeated Wang Chen 11-2, 8-11, 11-4, 15-13 in 36min. The final match saw the pair of Li Jia Wei and Wang Yue Gu polish off Crystal Huang and Gao Jun 11-5, 11-9, 11-7 in a quick 17min.
Seeded second behind China, expectations are high for a medal from the table tennis ladies. They will play Nigeria later tonight in their second group game.
