Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Wednesday, October 15, 2008 – Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) comfortably dispatched Temasek Polytechnic (TP) 4-0 in a Polytechnic-Institute of Technical Education (POL-ITE) Men’s Floorball Championship match.
TP started very defensively while NYP were very much on the offensive. From the attacking opportunities NYP had, it was no surprise that they took the lead thanks to a fumble by the TP goalie. He dropped a ball right in front of NYP #11 who was as quick as he was surprised, tapping it past the goalie to make it 1-0 to NYP.
TP thought they had equalized soon after when TP #11 put the ball into goal. But it was not to be as the referee spotted that the ball went in via the hands and not the stick. The period ended 2-0 in favour to NYP after NYP #16 put one on the scoreboard for his team.
The second period started much the same way as TP looked content to just sit back in numbers and hit NYP on the break. NYP on the other hand kept their high speed offense and did not allow TP any chance of launching counter attacks. The few counter attacks that TP had were largely ineffective as no one was at the end of the passes to convert it into a goal.
NYP nearly scored at times in the period but were surprisingly denied by the small TP goalie. NYP then got their second goal of the night through their #10 who did a turn before unleashing a drag shot that left the TP goalie with little chance. 3-0 to NYP.
NYP was in cruise control after the third goal as they held possession and constantly attacked the TP goal. NYP could have scored at least two more if not for the heroics of the TP goalie. TP on the other hand were reduced to playing meaningless passes into the NYP area as they were unable to pass or outrun their way past the faster and stronger NYP players. The NYP players constantly refused to give the TP players any space to play, dominating much of the court.
The third and final period started with TP almost getting one back. After the TP #99 had gotten a pass and was about to shoot, a great interception was made by the NYP #8 to deny him the chance. NYP kept piling on the pressure while the TP defense looked like it was relying solely on their goalie to keep them in the game.
The NYP #22 was yelling at the time keepers for the time before he remarkably scored the fourth goal for NYP. He received a ball and promptly turned around to unleash a drag shot past the TP goalie to make it 4-0. The NYP defense, looking very comfortable as they easily kept TP at bay, even ventured into the attack regularly.
The TP defense was chaotic every time NYP attacked. But their goalie just stood firm and refused to be beaten, denying NYP many goals. As the match drew to a close, the desperate TP players just took a pot shot at every ball hoping to get at least a consolation. But as the buzzer sounded, the match ended 4-0 in favour of NYP with no consolation for TP.
The NYP team is now within reach of second place and they will play Singapore Poly on Tuesday, 21st October and the Combined Institute of Technical Education team on Friday, 24th October.
