Hougang Sports Hall, Sunday, November 9, 2008 – Yuying Secondary beat Presbyterian High (Black) 2-0 (25-11, 25-8) in a Round 2, Group Y match at the 2008 National U-16 Girls Junior Volleyball Championship.
The first set began with many serves going out of bounds. PHS #14 served an out ball to give Yuying the first point. However, Yuying #13 returned the favour by serving an out ball as well. PHS’ early serves all went out of bounds, giving Yuying a comfortable 7-3 lead.
Yuying #17 then served a fast and powerful serve, leaving PHS #2 unable to receive it. But after this minor set back, PHS gained three points with their #13 serving up some strong balls which Yuying failed to retrieve.
At the 9-6 mark, the service aces came to a halt when PHS #14 spiked a ball out.
Yuying were soon leading 11-7 and they extended their lead to 12-7 when PHS #14 missed a spike by Yuying #18.
Earning many points for her team was Sophia (Yuying, #18) with her towering presence in the centre difficult to overcome. Yuying eventually climbed to 20-10.
Sophia (Yuying, #18) then finished the set off with a strong spike to win 25-11.
Yuying took the first point in the second set when the PHS #16 was unable to receive a spike. Aisyah (Yuying, #13) served two aces after that to give her team a 3-0 lead. The scoring streak did not stop as Aisyah earned three more points to bring the score to 8-0. Employing a side spin in her serves, it gave PHS much difficulty, forcing the PHS coach to call for a timeout after the players failed to receive several serves.
After the timeout, PHS scored their first point when Sophia (Yuying, #18) spiked a ball out. PHS #14 had the service, but missed the chance at scoring more points when she served the ball out of bounds.
PHS earned only their second point at 2-12 when Min Li (Yuying, #17) spiked into the net. The PHS #13 then scored for her team with a powerful spike to make it 3-12, marking the first point in the set won by merit.
However, Yuying’s lead was stretched even further when Sophia (Yuying, #18) served several fast aces and Yuying soon lead by a commanding 20-5.
After a rally, a shot by PHS saw Aisyah (Yuying, #13) and teammate #5 try to save the ball but miss. But Sophia (Yuying, #18) won another point with her powerful spike, the ball brushing the hands of the PHS #10 while the latter was trying to receive it.
Leading 23-6, it was the turn of the Yuying #11 to serve. However, she did not nail it, giving PHS a point to make it 7-23. However, the lead was just too big for PHS to catch up with and the PHS #13 missed a spike to gift the the set 25-8 to Yuying.

on that day,phs wasn’t on form lols.as the day before the match, they have training.and the training last like for 5 hours.and they lack of rest.last week, they can’t even rest properly lah,as wenesday and sunday is the only rest day for them but then they still have competition.it is tired.and their training is 5 weeks per week leh,of cause will tired lah.but yesterday which they played against st hildas, that did a great job.
Precisely. Sophia is good but humble. She knows when to stop. She knows her limits. And you, here, spoiling her name. Do you even know her personally? I wonder if you’re jealous or what. Without blocker, you sure you won’t be afraid when she spikes down? She is a potential ping piang person alright!
Telling people to “go and die” is a curse that can rebound on you in quite unexpected and tragic ways when you get older.
It is foolish to be so quick with such harsh words.
YUYING #18 – Sophia.
YUYING #13 – Aisyah.
YUYING #17 – Min Li.
Great report and great pictures! 🙂
