YMCA, Saturday, November 1, 2008 – The 2008 YMCA Fencing Cup was held earlier this month with Maxine Wong, 7 years of age, standing out as the youngest participant. The event saw 29 fencers take part in the Under-10 Mixed Foil and Under-12 Boys’ and Girls’ categories.
This competition was organized in Olympic style, with coloured fencing strips, a call area for fencers to report to and fanfare as the winners marched out to receive their medals and prizes.
To encourage the young fencers, more than just the traditional gold, silver and bronze medals were handed out. Apart from the Shooting Star Award that was given to Maxine Wong for being the youngest participant who displayed sportsmanship and bravery, Ysien Lau won the Fighter Award for outstanding fighting spirit.
The various local fencers fought under the banner of different fencing clubs in Singapore – Z Fencing, Absolute Fencing, Blade Club, Edgefield Primary school – and there was one international fencer, Eden Rokich, who flew in from Perth, Australia.
