Friday, December 19, 2008 – John Wilkinson, the midfielder whose presence was sorely missed in the ASEAN Football Championship (AFF Suzuki Cup) first leg semi-final against Vietnam, is still uncertain for Sunday.
“John is touch and go for Sunday,” said Football Association of Singapore spokesperson Eric Ong. Wilkinson injured his calf during training on Tuesday in Hanoi and did not start against Vietnam.
As a result, the Vietnamese overran Singapore completely and the Lions were lucky to escape with a 0-0 draw.
In the meantime, Aleksandar Duric, the first-choice striker who fractured his fibula in the first game against Cambodia, has returned to walking after a visit to his surgeon this morning.
“It’s looking good, ” said Aleks. “I am walking now, trying to walk normally. Doc said two more weeks and I should be running. I hope so. Anyway, it’s good I can walk.”
However, this still doesn’t give Aleks any chance of returning to the team to play a further part in the ASEAN championship campaign.
As for ticket sales for this Sunday’s semi-final against Vietnam, the FAS have reversed an earlier decision not to sell tickets tomorrow. Tickets are now going on sale tomorrow, Saturday, December 21st, from 10am to 5pm at Jalan Besar Stadium.
“Sales are moving along briskly,” said FAS spokesperson Eric Ong. Actual number of tickets sold will be announced only tomorrow night.

wilkinson will be much needed in our team right now… singapore is a team that is bereft of natural wingers with the only natural winger in our team being ridhuan mohammed, who isn’t having a very good tournament right now. what a shame khairul amri got injured right before the tournament started, he would’ve been a much needed spark on the wings. i think singapore’s biggest weakness now is the lack of attacking flair on the wing, because ridhuan just isn’t a very creative player, he only knows how to run down the flank and cross. if we’re gonna get some foreign talent we should have at least one winger in it too. just my two cents worth =)
