Republic Polytechnic, Monday, April 13, 2009 – Singapore Sports School were 33-13 victors against Ang Mo Kio Secondary in the National C Division Netball Championship quarter-final round.
Despite the loss, Ang Mo Kio went through to the semi-finals on the back of their previous wins and after Tanjong Katong Secondary’s draw with River Valley High.
The Singapore Sports School had clinched the North Zone championship title and Ang Mo Kio had finished fourth behind them.
Putting up a good defence against the Sports School, Ang Mo Kio did their best to pressure their opponents in the first quarter. Yet, the Singapore Sports School were able to counter them by playing to their height advantage, throwing long and high balls across the court to give themselves a 7-4 first quarter lead.
The second quarter was one-sided as the first seven goals were scored by the Singapore Sports School. Ang Mo Kio refused to give in and tried their best to steal as many rebounds as possible. Despite their efforts, the Sports School ended the first-half leading 17-7.
A confident Singapore Sports School returned to the courts in the third quarter and maintained their strong defence. Even though Ang Mo Kio tried to counter their opponents' attacks, they trailed 10-26 at the end of the third quarter.
Ang Mo Kio showed signs of dejection as they stepped back on the court in the final quarter. Taking advantage of their lead, the Sports School stepped up their aggressive play, putting more pressure on their opponents to finish the game 33-13 winners.
Both teams will move on to play the semi-final match this Wednesday at Bedok Sports Hall. Singapore Sports School will play against Raffles Girls' School, while Ang Mo Kio will battle it out with the team from Methodist Girls' School.
