Bedok Sports Hall, Wednesday, April 15, 2009 - West Zone runners-up Methodist Girls' School (MGS) triumphed 31-23 over Ang Mo Kio Secondary to qualify for the National C Division Netball Championship final.
Ang Mo Kio put up a solid defence in the first quarter as they gave their best to gain ball possession by blocking their opponents and intercepting their passes. MGS, however, were able to face up to the challenge set by Ang Mo Kio, as they upped the speed of the game. As the quarter wore on, MGS gained confidence and aggression, ending the quarter 8-5.
The second quarter seemed to fly by faster than the first. The game speed rose tremendously, and was sometimes too fast for either team to control. MGS showed accurate shooting technique to intimidate Ang Mo Kio and left the court leading 18-10 at half-time.
Ang Mo Kio returned to the court undaunted and revealed a fighting spirit that saw them outscore MGS 10-6 in the third to close the gap up. The end of the third quarter saw MGS leading by four at 24-20.
MGS stepped up their play in the fourth quarter to pull away from Ang Mo Kio's grasp. While Ang Mo Kio were playing a brilliant defensive game, it wasn’t enough to stop MGS from coming out tops and finishing 31-23 winners.
MGS captain, Kaiyisa, 14, said that their game today was better than all their previous games.
"We were too complacent with Anderson and we learnt from there. We really have a lot of respect for Ang Mo Kio and we played our best. We really played and gave it our all."
Ang Mo Kio Secondary will play Raffles Girls' School in the 3rd/4th playoff game, while Methodist Girls' School will play Singapore Sports School in the championship final.
