Padang, Wednesday, April 22, 2009 – St Andrew’s Secondary put together a 3-try performance to beat defending champions Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) 17-10 to capture the B Division Rugby Championship title this afternoon at the Padang.
While some ACS supporters will take issue with the referee for his calls, the Saints forward pack was the dominating factor in the match and ACS(I) composure was missing on the day.
The Saints shocked the watching ACS supporters when they drove straight towards their opponents try line and scored through Jia Jun (#17) in the 3rd minute. Though the try was not converted, the early 5-0 lead was a psychological booster shot for the Saints.
Jia Jun then earned himself a yellow card from the referee for a dangerous tackle as ACS(I) came storming back. ACS(I) pressure paid off with a flowing move which ended with Nazryn (#12) going over near the corner flag to make it 5-5.
But ACS hopes came crashing back down to earth when Nicholas Yau (#7) scored an unconverted try in the 15th minute for a 10-5 Saints lead.
Yet again, ACS(I) came back with an answer from their backline when Marah Ishraf (#7) dove over for a try in the 23rd minute after a good penetrating run by Joshua Quek (#9).
The teams walked off 10-10 at half-time and the underdogs Saints knew they had a chance to cause an upset against an ACS team that had scored 101 tries and conceded only one before today.
The second half was all Saints. Chong Yao missed a chance to put three points on the board with a missed penalty kick in the 4th minute but ACS relief was short-lived when Ahmad Ibrahim scored a try in the 9th minute. This time, Chong Yao converted to give Saints a 17-10 lead.
ACS(I) were struggling and it took them 15 minutes before they finally got past the Saints’ 22m line in the second half. ACS(I) then elected to go for a penalty kick near the 22m line but James Morgan’s attempt was wide and that was the last the boys in blue and yellow would ever see the inside of the Saints 22.
From then on, the ACS composure on the field started falling apart slowly, with Nicholas Tan (#15) dropping the ball twice as he failed to catch the long upfield punts of the Saints backline.
Despite having a perfect 8-wins-0-losses record so far and outscoring their opponents by a combined 593 to 13, including a 35-0 thrashing of Raffles Institution in the semi-final, this was the one game that meant the most to ACS(I).
For Saints, the victory was sweet.
“We feel good! We’ve been waiting for this for a long time!” said captain Bryan Lim. “The highlight was when we scored the first try because it lifted our spirits.”
“The first try was important psychologically,” said Saints old boy Gue Kit Wan, 26, a school captain and ex-rugby player from the 1999 batch. “The Saints are strong in forwards while AC is strong in the backline. But AC mistakes and composure killed them. Saints confined the play to their forwards.”
“The hungrier team won,” said Crosby Ong, 48, an ACS supporter. “The game lacked fluidity with insignificant technical calls. The ref should have let the play go, especially when it James Morgan had a clear advantage in the second half and the ref called it back.”
“It was the human drive, the tiger in them,” said another Saints old boy, Yee Teck Peng, 76. “Both sides are even but the side that was hungrier won. The Saints forwards played extremely well.”

YES…you have no idea how happy i am for SA…they have trained long and hard for the finals and all their effort finally paid off. they really deserved the win and ACSI juz wasent good enough for st andrews during the game. face it..ACSI cant just put all the blame on the refree because fact is that the better team won. st andrews deserved the win so congartulations to the SAINTS!
refs ARE the game; thats what the raffles bbdiv last year learnt when acsi won.
To the person who said that the ACS(I) players were much bigger built, i think you should go check your eyes man. Or maybe you are already blind! ACS(I) did not come up with a reason after losing. I think you are just hearing the sterotype version. ACS(I) really didnt play well. If you cant see that i think you all are really blind. Its a fact and not an opinion. Do you think the boys would just let their opponent win like that? I seriously doubt so. I think you all should just voice your general opinions and not treat the ACS(I) boys with any biasness.
me, juz a rugby lover, redsport reader, cant help but observe the unwarranted verbal wars each time sa plays agst other skols, esp acsi. I dun see much of such fights btw other skols. Y cant there be civility and respect for ea other. Rugby is such a beautiful game to behold, but sadly marred by cruelties as such, and the often controversial refereeing. sigh……….
theres no dispute both teams were good but to say which is the better team based on a…in my opinion, somewhat ‘refereeing-assissted’ win, leaves much to be desired.
Tho I am no fan of acs, I do wonder how on such an impt final, both linesmen who are ex saints ruggers are allowed to referee a match involving their alma mater. Wud some officials care to set things right? I certainly would’nt want to see the same occurrence shld my alma mater play agst sa.
The ‘neutral’ spectators, not to mention the acs supporters witnessed some very bad calls from these officials.
The ref yesterday was absolute rubbish. Let’s not talk about that. ACSI were not at the top of their game at all. They played badly period. Knowing this AC side, they would’ve won but full credit to saints. Unfortunately, there were some saint’s supporters who marred an otherwise tame event and that was totally uncalled for. It highlights the unsportsman like behaviour which was really unacceptable. How about all those times AC won, never once was it rubbed in the way Saints rubbed it in. And for Saints to claim that they can beat the ACSI A Div, I’m sorry but you’re not even close. If AC had their 17 year olds in the team yesterday, they would’ve won hands down. Saints enjoy this moment because next year, it would be a whole different story given the fact that last year ACSI C div thumped saints 39-0. So enjoy it while you can.:D
Just to add some comments, especially since I was quoted in the article above. My comments about the referee was from my perspective and from where I stood.
As for the match, that SA was the worthy winner is without doubt. Kudos to players & coaches. No ifs and buts. Did the better team win? As a parent of an ACS player and a supporter, I would perhaps subjectively say, “No”. But, in a competition, better teams do not always necessary win. Both teams were subjected to all the elements of a competition – luck, good/poor/bias refereeing, performance anxiety…etc.
More importantly, it was a good match. It is good that at this level it is not a one-sided situation. It is good to know that neither team can take each other for granted. Perhaps in future there will be even harder competition. It would be good for rugby in Singapore.
Finally, to all faithful supporters/fans, let’s keep our attitude civil and healthy. Let’s promote true sportsmanship – regardless if we win or lose.
To SA and ACS players, thank you for the very high standard of rugby play.
photo 2: number #11 is Taufiq, not chong yao. thanks
i played in that game and i think that sa was really the better team..yes we made some mistakes and we tried to fight back however the saints forwards was the better pack than ours..well gd job saints:)..funny to see how saints students quarrel with acsi ppl after the game whereas the saints and acsi players praising each other after the game..oh and daniel dont worry pizza hut sure will come one:)..
Looking at some of the comments….i have only two words:GROW UP.We won because of effort not luck and it’s not like ACS doesn’t rub it in our faces when they win. There was once where they brazenly ran with the acs flag in front of our school when they were winning the rugby finals.
From a totally objective view point, it was one of the best games of schoolboy rugby played for a very long time on the Padang.
Both sides were evenly matched – The Saints Forward pack Vs the ACS Backline.
The teams went back and forth, and thats ultimately what the spectators want in a final. A one sided final is always good for the winning team, but never as entertaining as one that goes to the wire. Both sides were nervous as the clocked ticked down,it was still anyone’s game.
ACS looked dangerous in the backs everytime the ball went to them in the game, and all they needed as a try to tie up the game. To the saints credit they managed the clock very well in the last 10mins and kept composure which lead them to the cup.
As a fan of either team, and even players, its easy to get caught up in the emotion of the game. That’s what makes school sports unique and that’s why Red Sports was set up. Let’s be objective, things are said in the heat of the moment, but at the end of the day, it was a great game for all rugby followers.
For the Saints congulations on a great win – these boys have been together for 4 years and thats the unity that showed through on the final day. For ACS, defeat is always a bitter pill, but with defeat comes knowledge and another chance to make the next game a more memorable one.
saint andrew’s rugby has been domination the rugby scene for a long time alr.it was a fair game btwn sas and acsi.and sas deserved to win because they are the real champions.
as for the a’div championship,i feel that acsi stands a higher chance to reclaim the title this year.this is due to the fact that most of their players are still together when going to year5 and 6.however,talents from sas does not neccessary go to SAJC to make up the a’div team.so SAJC’s team is sort of ‘less-bonded’ and may not be as well as acsi a’div team.
UP and ON!SAINTS!
i would like to point out the years ACS won they also had older boys in the team.
And the saint who said they could beat the ACS I A div team was a serial joker in school….
love this rivalry, love it, you see everyone fighting on message boards.
this is the sort of rivalry that makes the singapore school rugby scene fun. i miss this.
anyway, i would like to post a shout out to ACS old boy. ‘this is a sport column’ let the saints ruggers have their they. you are spoiling it for everyone bring something out of point here. if you feel strongly against what their students did ( do what singaporeans do best ) GO COMPLAIN. ( do you need a number? or do you want me to wikipedia it out for you? )
ACSian, all be gracious even in defeat, you guys are bigger than that. the saints played a terrific game.
Saints, do not gloat, be gracious even in victory we saw. you guys were awesome on the day. this year, this is yours. you guys are the champions congratulation.
i still miss this sort of passion and rivalry.
saint was worth winning the are brave and will never fall!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!<<<<<<<<<<<<
Why cant I find ACS(I) ‘A’ division team in this year’s competition? Can I simply assume that they are not competing?
SAS is playing with quite a few bigger and older boys compared to AC. On this account, both teams won. SA also shd not boast that they could beat the ACS(I)’s A div team becos’ they would be in the same age group. SA shd recognized that they have this advantage all these years, unlike ACS(I). So be humble; others are disadvantaged and very good as well.
nowsadays, everyone seems to be wearing skin tights for all sports at the national schools’ level.
on another note, Saints have been dominating B Div rugby since i was in Sec 4 in ACS(I), i think. That was in 2004. remembered that we had to go all the way down to Old Police Academy to watch the match- the whole school, that is.
which of the current sec 4s will b playing next year as sec 5s?
they actually won… nvr though they would do it again after my batch but well done anyway
