Singapore Basketball Centre, Sunday, May 17, 2009 – A last-second 3-point buzzer beater by SAFSA ended the reign of local powerhouse Home United Basketball Club.
Widely tipped as the hot favourites again for this season, Home United failed to defend their title and lost 63-64 to SAFSA.
A miraculous shot near half-court by ex-national and Tong Whye player Derrick Lin gave SAFSA a dramatic victory and created history since nobody can remember when they last lifted a trophy in the NBL.
SAFSA were relegated two years ago to the NBL Division 2 due to an ugly fight between them and Home United and they were promoted back into Division after a tough season in Division 2 last year.
SAFSA were newly reformed this year, due to the departure of some good players like Wei Kian and Teo Chun Hoe. Despite the departure of these players, they were injected with experienced players like Derrick Lin, Rudy Tan, Jia Ling and up and coming youngsters Guo Liang (Eng Tat), Jackson (Tagawa) and Steven Khoo. SAFSA were considered as one of the dark horses in Division 1.
Despite trailing in points all the way, they came back from an 18-point deficit to win by a point. They were no match for Home United in terms of skills and some will say they merely won by luck, but overall they put in a fantastic performance worthy of the championship that night.
Home United didn’t lose to SAFSA as much as they lost to themselves. Koh Meng Koon as usual played a great game, but just couldn’t get the important shots in at the crucial moments.
This loss also sends an important signal to Home United that the other teams in the NBL are also improving unlike previous years where beat teams easily.
The SAFSA victory is a sign that the intensity level of the NBL Division 1 will get higher next year.
u mean win Tong whye with 18 point got lady luck for safsa? To win a game in NBL Div 1 need Luck , Strength, Good defense, referee. all this factor will be required.
MIB, if u think safsa is not champion, which team u think???
😛
SAFSA last three games got Lady Luck…
Next year with whye nam promoting, i guess will be as exciting as this year, can’t wait to see wei jian in action with the experienced players in div 1 ..

Sipner: is it impt who is the coach for safsa?? the impt is everyone in safsa put in effort and change history. no one expect safsa to win the championship. must be fair to all.
Sinper: Is it impt who is the coach?? I believe everyone in safsa put in effort and it is not eaay to win the championship.. if not, how come Eng tat and Tong whye never get it??

Thanks LES….
But we have problem getting all the correct players names.
There are no websites or even from BAS site to get the TEAM data.
Isnt it sad…
Thanks Steven for the post 🙂
Josh, not the legends can’t adapt to the training methods but we think it’s time to let the younger players to have a chance to shine and represent national team with pride and honour. We used train under the methods which the national coach is using now or even worst. (Quote: Offense win the game, Defense win the championship)
If you guys wish to have a poll to vote the best 12 players for a squad, we can do it. Not a problem. If we can get at least 30 names to start the poll, we’ll do it.
How to change the mindset of BAS?? Maybe next time our NBL will change to 3 on 3 NBL…
Hey guys….
Its so good to chat here….
Is there any forum that we are able to post our thoughts…???
Because it will be sad to end this topic after awhile….
BAS should create this forum and digest our views…
CHeers…..

my favourite combination .. anyway to david, i’m not being biased against home united on my report, i just wanted to pay a tribute to SAFSA for putting in a good performance, & i’ve always respected home u for representing our country in various regional competition & achieving good results, & seriously i feel that it is a good thing to see such intensity in NBL which havent been happening for quite some time, becasue only that way, everyone will strive to improve isn’t it .. & thanx for posting my report, hope ya guys enjoy reading it .. ^^
these legends never play because they cannot adapt to the current national coach training methods
his training is basicallly fitness based (good and bad)
so for young player with a lot of energy……
