Anglican High School, Thursday, 2 July, 2009 – Host Singapore bounced back in style with a comprehensive 34-9 win over Uzbekistan to boost their chances of qualifying for the second round.
The game was over as early as the first period when Team Singapore raced to a 14-0 lead, led by captain and Catholic High student Jabez Su’s 6 points. Larry Liew of North Vista Sec and Russel Low of Presbyterian High contributed 5 points and 3 points respectively for the host’s big lead.
Uzbekistan managed to put some points on the board in the second period, but was unable to prevent the Singapore boys from stretching their lead to 25-3.
Jabez again contributed 6 points while Larry poured in 5 points from accurate shooting.
The second quarter was also significant with the introduction of reserve centre Goh Kong Tat into the game. Although he failed to score in the game, the fact that he played some serious minutes will definitely give him the confidence in the upcoming matches.
Larry Liew was the star in the third and final period, scoring all 9 of Singapore’s points from downtown to seal the win 34-9.
Later, a relieved Jabez Su highlighted the importance of the win.
“It is definitely a morale booster for our next game against India. That is a match we must win in order to progress to the next round,” he said.
India had earlier also trumped Uzbekistan by a similar scoreline 33-8.
India will next face Singapore in the final match of the first round at Anglican High School on Friday at 9.45am.
Scoring by quarters:
1st Period: Singapore 14 Uzbekistan 0
2nd Period: Singapore 11 Uzbekistan 3
3rd Period: Singapore 9 Uzbekistan 6
You’re right, Francis! I’ve not seen it from that point of view. Thanks for pointing that out:)
Just a comment, the game periods are not called quarters as a quarter is 1/4 part of a whole (1). So in FIBA 33, its called 1st to 3rd periods.
the Singapore boys showed their stuff today…i think they even played UZB better than how China played UZB. If they continue to play like how they played today, they will beat India tomorrow.
Good luck boys.
