Clementi Sports Hall, Monday, July 20, 2009 – Dunman Secondary recorded an impressive 73-29 blow-out of Peirce Secondary to underline their status as one of the favourites in a Group B boys first round qualifying match.
As if to emphasise the strength of the team, the Dunman Sec coach frequently rotated his players to the chagrin of their opponents. This seemed an excellent strategy as it kept their players fresh and energetic throughout the four quarters. Of course it helps if the entire squad of twelve can play!
Peirce Sec, however, did manage to contain Dunman in the first half by restricting them to a 20-16 lead at one point.
Yet the dam was always threatening to break and it happened as soon as the Peirce boys started to tire.
With the win, Dunman Sec confirmed their place in the quarter-final rounds together with Jurong Sec, who beat Deyi Sec 68-50 in an entertaining group match.
In the other boys matches played on the same day, Unity Sec continued their winning ways with a convincing 51-34 win over North Vista Sec. Catholic High, on the other hand, bounced back strongly from a first-game loss to win 79-55 against Dunman High. This sets up a mouth-watering clash between Unity Sec and Catholic High on Wednesday.
As for the girls, a clearer scenario is emerging in Group A. Jurong Sec beat Manjusri Sec 33-24 while Singapore Chinese Girls’ School triumphed over Compassvale Sec 40-28. Both teams would go on to qualify if they win their final first round matches.
