Queensway Secondary School, Friday, August 14, 2009 – Unbeaten Queensway Secondary hammered Siglap Secondary 6-0 for their 7th win in the girls’ C Division Football Championship. It was the last match for both teams before the semi-finals.

From the kick off, it took Queensway only a few minutes to gain possession. Off a pass from Queensway #11, Queensway’s #1 brought the ball down the flank to go for goal. However, her attempt was easily caught by the Siglap keeper as she fired it off at a wrong angle.

But it was not long before Queensway made another attempt. This time, the ball was caught by the Siglap keeper slightly behind the goal line.

There was a moment of hesitation as the referee decided whether to award the goal but the Queensway players were already confident the goal stood as they returned to the kick-off position before the referee blew to declare the goal good.

Both teams’ defence struggled to clear their lines but it was Queensway again who made the breakthrough. A loose ball was all it took for Queensway to make it 2-0.

Queensway’s #1 and #11 were key players for their team with their impressive individual skill and partnership. A pass from the Queensway #11 set up #1 for a goal attempt but the Siglap keeper denied her with a spectacular save. From the subsequent corner, however, Siglap could do little as the Queensway #11 converted to make it 3-0.

The Queensway #1 then scored shortly into the second half with a flick, with the ball bouncing into the goal after the keeper failed to get a grip on it.

Up 4-0, the pair continuously attacked the Siglap goal. Queensway could have notched one more goal when the Siglap goalkeeper parried an attempt by the Queensway #1 right into the path of the Queensway #8 who slid in only to see the ball go inches past the post for a wasted opportunity.

However, it was the Queensway #1 again who terrorised Siglap with a cool and calm lob over the keeper to make it 5-0.

The final goal came when a bad kick by the Siglap keeper saw an unmarked Queensway #1 stop it with her back heel, and volleying it to score the sixth goal for the team.

The Queensway #1 almost made it 7-0 when she unleashed a shot after feinting past a Siglap defender, only to see it fly above the bar.

A foul committed by Queensway led to a extremely good chance for Siglap to score a goal with a free kick awarded on the edge of the box. The Siglap #4 stepped up to take the shot, but her try hit the wall of Queensway defenders.

Queensway are top of the table with 21 points, followed by Woodlands Secondary and Deyi Secondary with 19 points. Bowen Secondary are fourth with 13 points.

The semi-finals will see Queensway Secondary take on Bowen Secondary, and Woodlands Secondary vs Deyi Secondary.
