Singapore Management University, Sunday, August 16, 2009 – Nanyang Technological University took home the most medals at the recent Aian Varsity Fencing Championship.

Back again this year, the Asian Varsity Fencing Championship (AVFC) provides a good gauge of the fencing standards of tertiary institutions within the Asian region.

This year’s event featured 130 participants in total with 27 overseas participants from India and Macau. Due to the H1N1 virus, participants from Hong Kong, Thailand and Indonesia had to give this year’s competition a miss.

With each local university and institution fielding national fencers and top-notch fencers from India and Macau, the AVFC saw no lack of exciting bouts.

This was especially true with the Men’s Epee Team event. Ngee Ann Polytechnic(NP) made a spectacular comeback in the semi-finals after trailing for most of the bout to emerge victorious with a score of 45-44. NP eventually emerged as the champion for the Men’s Epee team event.

In the Men’s Epee Individual event, Ng Kuan Khai (NUS) went through a dramatic journey to claim the gold medal as he met top qualifier Lee Young (SMU). Ng Kuan Khai managed two consecutive wins in the semi-final and final with a tight score of 15-14 in his favour.

Similarly in the Men’s Foil Team event, Eddie Sng and Alexey Bobok, who finished 1st and joint-3rd respectively in the individual event, spearheaded the NTU team. Their opponents in the final were NUS who led by Tan Yuan Zi and Anthony Tsang who finished 2nd and joint-3rd respectively in the individual event. The NUS team won the final bout 45-40.

However, the show belonged to Nanyang Technological University as they performed consistently throughout the two-day event. While the Men’s Epee Individual and Team event saw their absence in the top spots, NTU bagged 2 medals in all other events (apart from Women’s Foil Team event in which they were 2nd only).
