Toa Payoh Sports Hall, August 21, 2009 – Despite a healthy home crowd support, Singapore failed to take home their first win in the Australia Netball League as they went down 29-78 to Western Australia in Round 5 of the tournament.
The first quarter saw Western Australia scoring with ease while the nervous Singapore team struggled under their opponent’s tight man-on-man defence. Western Australia went into second quarter with a staggering 25-2 lead over Singapore.
In the second quarter, a swap between Chen Huifen and Li Huilin immediately paid dividend to the home team as Singapore scored 10 goals for the quarter. Lin Qing Yi’s replacing of Serene Lim at the defending end also saw Singapore answering Western Australia’s attack. However, Singapore still could not stop Western Australia from registering 18 goals.
Heading into the third quarter with the score at 43-12, an erratic third quarter from the adjusted line-up of Singapore’s attacking end gifted Western Australia valuable turnovers. Western Australia did not look back as they powered ahead to take the quarter 61-19.
In the last quarter, WA scored eight consecutive goals before Singapore found their presence on court. A see-sawing affair was then observed with Singapore returning every point that Western Australia scored. However, the score margin was too wide to make a difference in the game. Western Australia soon wrapped up the game 78-29.
