Republic Polytechnic Sports Complex, Monday, October 19, 2009 – Nanyang Polytechnic girls enjoyed a 9-0 win over Singapore Polytechnic in their opening game of the Polytechnic-Institute of Technical Education (POL-ITE) Floorball Championship.
The NYP girls showed their dominance right from the start, wasting no time in setting the pace of the game and containing the SP girls in their own half. Two minutes into the first period, Nur Mahirah (NYP #6) scored the first goal when her teammate passed it to her from the SP back line.
Just four minutes later, Nur Hamizah (NYP #16) made it 2-0 when she evaded the SP defenders to score the second goal.
Siti Baizurah (SP #90) tried to close the gap in the dying minutes when she broke free of the NYP defenders and went head-to-head with the keeper. However, the safe hands of Siti Syamimi (NYP #49) kept the scoreline at 2-0 at the end of the first period.
The second period saw the SP girls pressed back in their own half and losing possession easily. NYP showed no mercy, putting four goals in the net in that period alone.
The first came Just a minute into the second period. Assists by Syafizah (NYP #11) and Siti Melissa (NYP #19) saw Nur Hamizah tap it easily past the SP keeper for a 3-0 lead.
Following that goal, Syafizah chalked up another goal after a one-two with Aulisen for a 4-0 lead at the 16:41 mark. Aulisen made it 5-0 at 22:00 when she found the back of the net as well.
The sixth goal for NYP came from a penalty taken by Marie Clarisse (NYP #9), which was awarded when an SP defender stepped into the keeper’s box.
Even with the huge lead, the NYP girls were not resting on their laurels and poured in three more goals. Three minutes into the period, Aulisen brought the ball in from the left flank and hit a shot past three SP defenders to make it 7-0.
Nur Saliza Rusley (NYP #77) added to the score just a minute later to make it 8-0 and the final goal of the game came from Nurashyqah (NYP #23), who took advantage of a lapse in the SP defence with an assist from NYP #27 to seal it 9-0.
“The girls were jittery, they can do better,” commented NYP’s Coach Ru Yi. She revealed that the NYP girls have been training for almost a year since the last POL-ITE season, but stepped up the intensity in the last two months for the games.
“A lot of players stepped up today … The first girl who scored (Nur Manirah) wasn’t a key player,” Coach Ru Yi revealed about her girls. She agreed that teamwork was essential for their win today.
NYP will next face Ngee Ann Polytechnic on Wednesday, October 21.
