Republic Polytechnic Sports Complex, Friday, October 30, 2009 – Republic Polytechnic kept their unbeaten record in the women’s Polytechnic-Institute of Technical Education (POL-ITE) Floorball Championship when they beat Ngee Ann Polytechnic 4-1. Their fourth straight victory placed them in a good position to clinch the POL-ITE crown.
Both sides were evenly matched in the first period, having their fair shares of hits and misses. Reena Wong (RP #8) scored the first goal of the game after 7 minutes of play.
With 3 minutes left for the period, Siti Maryam Bte Ab Hamid (NP #28) made a goalkeeping blunder, throwing the ball straight into the path of Dai Yi Wen (RP #7). Yi Wen did not hesitate and capitalised on the mistake, tapping the ball easily back into the net, making it 2-0 to RP at the end of the first period.
Yi Wen found the back of the net once again, scoring the only goal in the second period. Her shot bypassed three players and went straight into the goal, giving RP a 3-0 lead.
NP had some good chances in the final 5 minutes, where Julian Lim (NP #21) had a shot but it was deflected off an RP defender. RP’s goalkeeper did not rest on her laurels even though her team had a comfortable lead, denying Adeline (NP #26) a scoring chance when she reached out to block the shot from the left flank.
RP Captain Marie Denisse (RP #4) made it 4-0 to RP 5 minutes into the third period when she dribbled down the right flank and passed two defenders and hit an unstoppable shot past the NP goalkeeper.
The only goal from the NP side came from Cally Lim (NP #29) in the final 3 minutes of the game when she scored from the left flank, drawing cheers from the NP supporters.
“The girls are much more capable… In their passes, movement, hunger for the ball. They seemed a little subdued today,” commented RP Coach Jamie Chong on their 4-1 win. He thought his girls were a little lucky today and had expected more from them.
RP will next face Nanyang Polytechnic on Wednesday, 4 November, in their last game of the POL-ITE Championship, while this was the final game for the NP girls. With four wins, the title seems to be in the bag for the RP girls, but Coach Jamie insists that they will take the game against NYP seriously and play their utmost.
