SAFRA Yishun, Sunday, November 15, 2009 – SAFRA ROCK On 2009 concluded with some of the youngest climbers pitting their skills and speed for the first time in the inaugural Junior (Under-12) category.

Russell Boon, 11, winner of the Speed Junior Boys category, scaled 10 meters up the climbing wall along two routes in a total of only 39.76 seconds to clinch the top spot. The Maris Stella High School (Primary) student only took up the sport more than a year ago when he decided to join sport climbing as a Co-curricular Activity in his school.

"This is my first time participating in a climbing competition. I have been training three times a week at my school since the holidays began," said Russell.

Organised by SAFRA Yishun and supported by the Singapore Mountaineering Federation and Singapore Sports Council, this climbing event returned after a two-year hiatus with 211 climbers competing in the ‘Difficulty’ and ‘Speed’ climbing categories. The competition was held at SAFRA Adventure Sports Center over two weekends.

The competition also saw recognisable homegrown climbers such as Jay Koh, and leading climbers from the region including top Malaysian female climber Salfarina and top Indonesian female speed climber Tri Ardianti putting their strength and technique to the test in the Difficulty Open categories.

This year, the event also boosts experienced route setters from three different countries - Tedi Ixdiana from Indonesia, Francis Low from Malaysia and Singapore's very own Philip Lim, to ensure an interesting mix in the difficulty and challenge offered by each climbing route.

Formerly known as the National Sport Climbing Championship, ROCK On has been a landmark event in the local climbing scene since 1992. While the Difficulty climbing categories test the skills and techniques of climbers, the Speed categories emphasises agility and speed.
