East Coast, Monday, November 23, 2009 – Scott Glen Sydney, 18, one of Singapore's top Laser sailors who is currently serving his National Service, topped the score board at the three-day NOSS Sailing Championship.
Scott beat the rest of the competition in the single-handed Byte division winning nine out of ten races. Brothers Tan Jen U, 15, of St Joseph's Institution and Tan Jen-E, 13, of Raffles Institution, followed in second and third position respectively.
The NOSS Sailing Championship concluded today with 10 races conducted for the Byte fleet and eight races for the Optimist sailors held off the National Sailing Centre.
In the Optimist class, Kimberly Lim Min, 13, of Tanjong Katong Girls' School, put on a consistent performance to collect a mere 13 points to win the regatta. Runner-up Elisa Yukie Yokoyama, 12, of CHIJ Katong Convent, came in second place with three points ahead of third placed Jeremiah Guo,13, of the Singapore Sports School.
The 2009 NOSS Championship is one of the two nomination events for sailors vying to represent Singapore in the Optimist class at the 2010 Asian Sailing Championship, the test event leading up to the 2010 Asian Games in Shanwei, China.
The second nomination event will be the upcoming Malaysian National Championship in Langkawi, Malaysia this December. Performance in these events will form the primary basis, but not the only basis, for selection to the SingaporeSailing Team for the 2010 Asian Sailing Championship.
On the international front, Singapore sailors are also raring to go in a few events.
The Youth Olympic Games (YOG) training squads are currently in Pattaya for the YOG Asian Qualifier, the 2009 Byte CII Asian Championship 2009. Racing starts 24 November.
Meanwhile, the windsurfers are also in Thailand preparing to compete in the Pattaya Cup from 27 to 29 November 2009.
The Olympic classes' sailors in the 470 and Lasers will be competing in Sail Sydney Regatta from 5 to 8 December 2009.
