Laos, Thursday, December 17, 2009 – Singapore won a gold, seven silvers and a bronze on the penultimate day of competition at the 25th South East Asian (SEA) Games in Laos.

Shot putter Zhang Guirong retained her gold medal won in the previous Games when she threw a distance of 17.12 metres. Zhang was streets ahead of the competition, winning handily by nearly a metre and a half.

The men’s 4x100m relay team, an event mired in perennial controversy over team selection in recent years, had an excellent showing. The quartet of Gary Yeo, Muhd Elfi Mustapa, Lee Cheng Wei and Muhd Amirudin broke the national record of 40.10 seconds en route to a silver medal.

Their time of 39.82s went under the hallowed 40-second barrier which seemed an invisible, ever-moving target which previous teams had tried but failed to better.

Other silvers were picked up by the women’s badminton doubles duo of Shinta M Sari and Yao Lei, Charlene Chai in the women’s 9 Ball Pool Singles, Wee Pui Seng in the men’s Judo 90-100 kilogram category, Shakir Juanda and Dinniyati Juraimi in Silat, and Sulaiman Yusoff in wrestling’s 66-74 kg event.

The football team beat Laos 3-1 in the 3rd and 4th placing match to repeat their bronze-medal showing from 2007.

The conclusion of the Athletics programme, as expected, also signalled Team Singapore’s fall in the medal standings. They now lie sixth with 33 golds, 30 silvers and 34 bronze medals. Hosts Laos lurk closely behind with 32 golds.
