National University of Singapore, Monday, January 4, 2010 – Defending champions Nanyang Technological University (NTU) suffered a surprising 43-46 defeat against Temasek Polytechnic (TP) in their first game of the 2010 Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic (IVP) Netball Championship.
In the first quarter, due to the slight drizzle, players from both teams were rather cautious. TP scored the first point, with both NTU goal defenders called out of play for obstruction. NTU then fought back, scoring three consecutive goals.
TP was not one to give up and stepped up their speed of play to counter NTU’s aggression and narrowly took the lead 12-11 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, TP pressured NTU with their solid defence and speed to slowly gain a 5-goal lead. Despite this, NTU fought back and reduced the deficit to one goal but TP pulled away once more to finish the second quarter leading 25-18.
In the third quarter, NTU managed to outscore TP 13-12 but still trailed 31-37 at the end of the quarter.
This set the stage for an exciting final quarter. NTU again managed to outscore TP, scoring 12 goals. However, TP scored nine of their own to ensure a 46-43 win.
Elizabeth Cheong, 19, captain of TP’s team was proud of her team.
“I think we played pretty well. We were focused for most of the game, concentrating on what our coach told us to do. Even though we fumbled at the last quarter, we managed to regain our focus.”
TP’s next game will be on Wednesday, 6 January 2009 against Republic Polytechnic at 8:20pm, while NTU’s game against Singapore Institute of Management will be at 7pm on the same day.
All the best to all teams!
