ITE East, Thursday, January 21, 2010 – The Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) beat the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) 3-2 to book their place in the final of the Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic (IVP) Badminton Championship.
The NTU men’s team was faced with an impossible task of defeating a team bolstered with the likes of Singapore Olympian Ronald Susilo, SEA Games silver medalist Kendrick Lee, and current Singapore number one Derek Wong. While they did take the two doubles match-ups, there was no upset in the three singles against their superior opponents.
Ronald Susilo led the way with a 21-8 21-8 straight sets victory over NTU’s Zhang Fan while his counterparts rounded up their encounters in similar fashion. Final score, SIM 3 NTU 2.
SIM will next play Temasek Polytechnic (TP), who won their semi-final encounter against Nanyang Polytechnic (NP) 3-0, in friday’s final.
In the women’s tournament, NTU thrashed Singapore Polytechnic (SP) 3-0 while the National University of Singapore (NUS) won their encounter over SIM 3-0.
The losers of the semi-finals will face each other in the 3rd position playoff.
Final day of competition will take place on Friday, January 22, at ITE East.
