Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP), Wednesday, January 27, 2010 – It was double delight for the home fans at NYP, as their athletes snapped up both gold medals on offer on the track, with Phua Hui Qin and Marcus Ong winning the women’s 3000m and men’s 10,000m respectively.

Hui Qin ran a commanding race to win in 12 minutes 4 seconds. Radhiyah Moctar of Temasek Polytechnic (TP) and Amanda Cheng of Singapore Polytechnic (SP) finished in 12:30 and 12:45 to win the silver and bronze medals respectively.

With the home crowd still celebrating Hui Qin's victory, Marcus Ong was busy circling the track in his quest to add a second gold medal to his team's tally. After twenty-five grueling laps of the track, Marcus fulfilled his mission.

Improving upon his 37:15 performance at last October’s Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic (IVP) Championships, where he painfully finished just outside of the medals in fourth place, Marcus clocked 37:05 to claim a convincing victory.

His nearest competitor, Muhammad Ilyas of SP, was a further 49 seconds behind, running 37:54 to take the silver medal. Alvin Lim Guo Hua of Republic Polytechnic (RP) finished third in 38:06.

With NYP taking the competition to their opponents and drawing first blood, other teams will undoubtedly be aiming to strike back when the competition resumes tomorrow at the Bukit Gombak Stadium. With the stage set, let the show begin!
