CCAB, Friday, February 5, 2010 - Queensway Secondary School, again led by stalwart Johann Yeo, opened their Boys' B Division South Zone basketball second round campaign with a 59-45 win over Fairfield Methodist Secondary School.

With the graduation of starting centre and point guard Jia Jun and Jeremy Ng from last year's standout team, which made the quarter-finals of the B Division basketball nationals for the first time in the school's history, 17-year-old Johann, a holdover from that team, was always going to be the team's focal point in attack.

He scored 23 points and was a constant thorn in the Fairfield defence. His trademark drives down the lane and overall basketball intelligence and game awareness stood out in the Group Y match, which was not all smooth sailing for Queensway.

Trailing 15-10 to begin the second period, Fairfield captain Goh Bing Da and Alan Ang combined for 10 points in the quarter as a 9-0 run allowed the team to wrestle the lead away from the Queensway, and Fairfield went into the half-time break with a slim 27-26 advantage.

That lead would not last long, as Queensway’s Huang Wei Ling scored after the team had four consecutive offensive boards to hand the lead back to his team at 30-29, and Johann ensured Queensway would come away with the victory as he scored 12 second-half points.

Fairfield's Chan Xiang Yi led his team with 17 points in a valiant effort, including all eight of his team's third quarter points, but his fouling out in the fourth contributed to the team's inability to make a game of it in the final period.

"We lost our focus in the third and fourth quarters. Xiang Yi fouled out in the fourth quarter, while Alan had to sit out for five minutes in the final period due to an injury," said Bing Da.

"But we have put in our best today. We put up a good fight."

Queensway's next game will be against Balestier Hill Secondary School, while Fairfield will meet Guangyang Secondary School, a match in which either school would come away with their first victory. Both matches will tip off at 1415 hrs on Monday, February 8, at CCAB, Evans Road.
