Bukit Panjang Govt High overcome Jurong Sec to take third place in West Zone C Division Girls Volleyball

Hua Yi Secondary, Thursday, February 18, 2010 - Bukit Panjang Government High beat Jurong Secondary 2-1 (22-25, 25-18, 25-10) to take third place in the West Zone C Division Girls Volleyball Championship. They came back from one set down to overcome their opponents after winning the rubber set decisively.

Jurong started off the game strongly, racing to a 16-9 lead in the first set. Bukit Panjang didn't seem fazed by the challenge and slowly caught up point by point. A few slip ups by Jurong quickly saw Bukit Panjang within one point of Jurong at 19-20. Jurong saw their lead erode away after Yanting (Jurong, #6) return Wenxin’s (Bukit Panjang #4) serve out of bounds.

To make matters worse, Bukit Panjang took the lead after Leyuan (Jurong #7) spiked the ball into the net. However, Jurong quickly equalized after Wenxin (Bukit Panjang #4) served into the net. Two good serves from Ee Min (Jurong #4) saw the Jurong lead extend to two points at 23-21. A timeout by Bukit Panjang seemed to have an effect on Ee Min as she served the next ball out but set point was gifted to Jurong after Xinyi (Bukit Panjang #6) served into the net.

With the score at 24-22, a Jurong return was headed towards the net, with the Jurong setter attempting to dunk over. The Bukit Panjang #8 was on hand to stuff out the attempt and it seemed like Jurong's win was going to be put on hold. However, Bukit Panjang #8 was deemed to have touched the net and the set ended in favour of Jurong, 25-22.

The second set also saw Jurong taking an early lead. A Bukit Panjang timeout was not enough to hold off the Jurong onslaught as they raced to a 12-5 lead. But it was not to be Jurong's day as Bukit Panjang started catching up again. To make matters worse, Jurong were gifting several points to their opponents from a few slip ups in their rallies.

Bukit Panjang tied the score at 13-13, after Lisa’s (#17) serve was touched out by the Jurong #5. From then on, the score was close, and both teams were tied at several points during the set. Bukit Panjang reached 23-18 after a spike from their centre saw Jurong unable to retrieve.

Xinyi (Bukit Panjang #6) then forced a touch out with her serve to bring the team to set point. A spike down into the net by Leyuan (Jurong #7) from the outside saw Bukit Panjang win the set 25-18.

Bukit Panjang applied pressure right from the start of the rubber set. Strong serves from Debbie (#2) kept Jurong at bay as the latter found it difficult to organize any strong attacks. Jurong made a few changes to the roster but could not hold off Bukit Panjang. At the change over, Bukit Panjang led 13-1. It was only after a good drop shot by Huiyuh (Jurong #2) did they temporarily stop the onslaught at 14-2.

Trailing by 13 (3-16), Jurong called a timeout but things only slightly improved as they still trailed by 11 (9-20). Bukit Panjang were soon at game point after the Jurong #1 had a bad return. A bad serve by Bukit Panjang temporarily held off the invevitable but miscommunication in the Jurong camp on the next rally saw them unable to get the ball across, gifting a point, and the game to Bukit Panjang.
