Kallang Tennis Centre, Wednesday, February 24, 2010 - Under the scorching midday sun, tennis powerhouse Raffles Girls' School (RGS) triumphed 3-2 over Singapore Chinese Girls' School (SCGS) in the B Division Tennis Championship finals to successfully defend their title. This was the fourth title in a row for RGS.
It was a nail-biting finish as both teams were evenly matched in terms of grit and skill. Both doubles matches evidenced as much, with each side winning a point apiece. The SCGS pairing of Samantha Lau and Sandra Seah defeated RGS' Stephanie Yeap and Smrithi K 6-4, 6-1, while RGS' Inez Songadiwardhana and Archana G outplayed SCGS' Cheryl Wong and Lee Ruijia 6-0, 6-2.
The two schools also shared the spoils for the first two singles matches. Elizabeth Wong from RGS posted a 6-2, 6-0 win over Chelsea Chan from SCGS.
In the adjacent court, Jean Chiew from RGS and Olivia Koh from SCGS battled it out with tenacity, with each attempting to outdo the other with powerful serves. Olivia eventually emerged as the victor with a score of 6-4, 7-5.
With the overall team score standing at 2-2, the final was brought right down to the wire, with the crunch match between Nicole Rosenberger from RGS and Hoe Ying Mei from SCGS. Halfway through the match, Ying Mei was unexpectedly struck with a leg injury, much to the dismay of the vocal SCGS supporters. However, despite her obvious pain, she bravely soldiered on but eventually conceded the match 6-2, 6-4 to Rosenberger.
