Presbyterian High School, Monday, March 22, 2010 - Dunman Secondary swept aside Hua Yi Secondary 2-0 (25-8, 25-16) in the quarter-finals of the National C Division Girls Volleyball Championship.
Dunman took the first point with a good serve from Faith (Dunman #7). Celine (Dunman #9) then took the next point as well with her spike from the centre. Dunman flexed their muscles early in the game, and took a 7-0 lead, leading to a time out by Hua Yi.
Hua Yi seemed to have difficulty settling into the game as they provided no answers to the Dunman attacks. Dunman continued their momentum and blitzed to a 15-3 lead.
They had no problems putting points on the scoreboard, and took the set 25-8 after a drop shot by the Dunman #6.
The first point in the second set was won after a long rally with Faith (Dunman #7) spiking from the outside to the back-line. Hua Yi's setter could not set the ball at the next rally, allowing Dunman to take another point. Dunman fired their engines and quickly pulled to a 6-2 lead.
However, they made mistakes and saw Hua Yi pull to within two points at 11-9. After a series of long rallies, Dunman pulled ahead to command a 17-9 lead. It was not long before Dunman were at set point after Celine (#9) spiked a high ball to the back line. However, Dunman were not able to take the set at the next point as Hong Hwee (Dunman #10) could not serve across.
Celine (Dunman #9) then spiked a ball out of bounds for Hua Yi to take another point. Dunman had to hold off their celebrations when Celine (Dunman #9) spiked into the net. Dunman's setter finally took the match for the team when she sent the ball at the second touch to an empty spot in Hua Yi's court.
Hua Yi and Dunman are drawn in Group X alongside Nanyang Girls' High and Ngee Ann Secondary. Hua Yi will play Nanyang Girls' on Thursday, March 25 at 2.40pm. Ngee Ann will then fight it out with Dunman Secondary at 3.30pm. Both matches will be played at CCAB.
