Clementi Sports Hall, Wednesday, March 24, 2010 - North Vista Secondary tipped off their National B Division Basketball Championship campaign with a comfortable 65-36 victory over New Town Secondary.
After a relatively close first quarter where North Vista only managed a 12-7 lead, North Vista blew open the game in the second quarter, winning it 22-8 to establish a massive 34-15 lead. The second half was just a formality as North Vista rested a few of their starting five and still managed to run out 65-36 winners. Gabriel Tan and Larry Liew both scored 13 points each to lead their side.
In the other boys' Group B match, South Zone runners-up Peirce Secondary gave Ngee Ann Secondary no chance, running out 79-44 winners. Although only one point separated the teams at the end of the first quarter, Peirce turned up their game to stretch their lead to 13 points at 29-16 by the end of the half. Led by Muhd Noor Hadi's 23 points, there was no stopping Peirce from there as they sealed victory in the second half.
The girls' B Division champioship also tipped off on Wednesday with Singapore Chinese Girls’ School (SCGS) registering a 65-39 victory over Assumption English School (AES) in Group A. Alanna Lim (SCGS #10) turned in a 31-point performance and together with Gladys Molino (SCGS #8), dominated the game for their side as they scored 47 of their team's points. Although Janice Tan (AES #11) scored 28 points, she was not able to stop SCGS as her team faded away in the fourth, scoring only one three-pointer.
The other Group A match saw Naval Base Secondary beat Dunman High, 52-31.
In Group C, defending champions Dunman Secondary thrashed Nan Chiau High 75-29, but despite the victory, coach Danny Wong wasn't too please with his team’s performance.
"I am not really happy with the performance," commented Danny after the match. "With it being the first game, my team was a bit nervous and there were a lot of individual mistakes, especially in the first quarter. The other team (Nan Chiau) posed problems and stopped us from doing certain things that we wanted to do."
"In our next match, we will face Zhonghua and we will be expecting a tougher match."
Zhonghua Secondary were extremely lucky to grind out a win against Jurong West Secondary as they beat the West Zone runners-up by just a single point, 37-36. With time winding down in the fourth quarter and Zhonghua holding a 37-35 lead, Lee Qiuhui (Jurong West #5) had a chance to draw level and win it for her side with three free throws, but she missed two to give the game to Zhonghua.
