Clementi Sports Hall, Friday, March 26, 2010 - South Zone champions Queensway Secondary edged out defending national champions Presbyterian High 55-52 for a winning start to their National B Division Boys Basketball Championship campaign.
Johann Yeo had a game-high 18 points to lead his side to a vital victory in this Group A clash while teammate Ian Rafio Amatril (#13) added 13 including a three-pointer in the closing stages to put the game beyond Presbyterian High's reach.
Presbyterian High had the better start as they established a 14-10 lead at the end of the first, but Queensway were quick to respond, leveling the tie at 16-all before taking a 19-18 lead into the second half.
Queensway then continued to extend their lead in the third, starting with a 6-0 run and holding a 35-30 lead by the end of the quarter.
Not to be outdone, Presbyterian High made a final push in the fourth quarter. They efforts paid off as they tied the match at 44-44 but towards the end of the match, Queensway managed to pull away thanks to some defensive errors by Presbyterian High and a three-pointer by Ian Rafio Amatril. That allowed Queensway to win the match 55-52.
Both teams play their next match on Tuesday, with Presbyterian High facing an uphill task against Dunman Secondary, who beat Hwa Chong Institution 51-43 in the other Group A match. Queensway will hope to continue their good form against Hwa Chong.
Both matches will start at 1330 hours.
