NUS, Thursday, March 18, 2010 – The National University of Singapore rugby team beat the Nanyang Technological University 27-8 to capture the Inter-Varsity Rugby Championship title.
Shafiq Zulazmi scored two converted tries within the first 15 minutes of the game to give his team a 14-0 lead. NTU, who found their advances continually rebuffed, managed to score a penalty just before half-time to trail 3-14.
NTU scored another try in the second-half to pull to within six points at 8-14 but NUS came back with a try to reestablish a more comfortable lead at 19-8. A Zulazmi penalty then made it 22-8.
In the 55th minute, Justin Buey scored NUS' final try to make it 27-8.
It was a sweet victory for NUS as the team had lost to the Singapore Management University by a point in last year’s inter-varsity rugby final.
"It felt very bad,” said NUS rugger Siong Kiat, recalling last year’s loss to SMU. “That's why we were trying to train up and win back the championship this year."
