Clementi Sports Hall, Wednesday, March 31, 2010 - Unity Secondary continued their march in the National B Division Basketball Championship with an 83-49 win over Yuying Secondary which secures a quarter-final berth.
The game was extremely fast-paced and aggressive with Yuying showing no fear against a Unity team with five national age-group players.
Yuying put the first points on the board but Unity’s Peter Soo (#4) quickly responded in kind. Wong Keng Yang (#8) soon followed suit with a layup to put Unity in the lead and his team ended the first quarter ahead 23-13.
Despite the aggression of the Yuying side, the Unity players retained their composure and relied on their swift transition from defense to attack to steadily dismantle their opponents. The almost telepathic understanding and synergy between the Unity players enabled them to extend their lead to 21 points by the end of the second quarter.
Credit to Yuying, they kept their morale high throughout the match with support from a vocal bench despite the clear superiority of Unity. Unity started the fourth quarter leading 61-30 before adding another 22 points win the game 83-49.
Unity are now unbeaten in 13 matches this season and will next take on Yishun Secondary.
Yishun, who finished second in the North Zone championship, have won both their national round games so far, beating Yuying (89-61) and Dunman High (70-55) and will progress to the quarter-finals.
Just like in the Yuying game on Friday, Yishun failed to stamp their dominance on the game against Dunman High in the opening minutes, allowing them to race to a 9-0 lead. However, they soon got into their groove and managed to level the match at 10-10 before ending the quarter 17-12 up.
Yishun then dominated the second quarter 18-7 to give Dunman High no chance of a comeback.
Although their opponents did win the last quarter by a point at 20-19, Yishun’s lead was too great and they easiest wrapped up the match.
The Unity-Yishun game is scheduled for Tuesday, April 6th, at Clementi Sports Hall. Tip-off time is 1.30pm.
