Kallang Tennis and Squash Centre, Thursday, April 8, 2010 – In their opening match against Raffles Institution two Mondays ago, SJI scored a narrow 3-2 victory over the Rafflesians. In the process, SJI underlined their credentials as a legitimate contender for the C Division Squash Championship crown worn by Anglo-Chinese School (Independent).
To further strengthen their claim for a place in the final, to be played on April 19th, 2010, SJI outplayed last year’s runners-up Fairfield Methodist 4-1. Meanwhile, earlier this week, defending champions ACS(I) beat RI 3-2 to end the title hope of its traditional rivals. Despite the seemingly close final score, ACS(I)’s title hopes were never seriously threatened as they easily won the first there ties against an unbalanced RI team to confirm their victory.
Today, in a group-stage match, SJI will seek to defeat ACSI to bolster their confidence when both teams meet again in the expected title match less than two weeks from now. On paper, the ACS(I) team helmed by Pang Ka Hoe (a national U-17 winner) and Benedict Chan (a national U-15 winner) have a slight edge over an SJI team spearheaded by Gladwin Giam (national U-15 4th) and Darryl Tan (national U-15 5th).
However, the SJI team have arguably a marginally stronger and better-balanced supporting cast at the number 3 to 5 positions. Hence, the outcome of this titanic clash today may well hinge on the coaches’ strategy in term of the players’ playing order.
Stay tuned to this space.
ACS (I) will be meeting HCI(not FMSS) in the B Div Finals on Tuesday.
Once again this is Samuel Soon Yi Xiang, signing off…
My two best friends are in the finals!!!go guys!!
This is Darren, the new player on Acs(I) team.I agree with vice captain soon regarding our odds to win..it will be a final and of course no final is easy..although there still is a chance we might meet hwa chong if ff lose to sji this tuesday..Both teams have certainly worked hard and it will surely be a great final..=)
Signing off,Darren,acsi player 2010..
this is samuel soon yi xiang, vice-captain of the acsi team. although people have been saying that chances of us winning are almost 100%, we cannot let these rumours get to our head and get overconfident. we must strive to uphold the school mottto, ‘the best is yet to be’ and be exemplary scholars, officers and gentleman.
signing off,
samuel soon aka soon wu kong, monkey, tarzan, apeman, kingkong etc..

thanks 😀 today is the last day of the B Div for those not in the finals D:
A minor correction. C div’s last group stage matches were played on 12 April, Monday. ACSI finished their schedule unbeaten after beating FMSS 4-1 in their last match. ACSI will play SJI next Monday for the Boys’ C Div title. With Pang Ka Hoe vitually unplayable at this level and Benedict Chan a almost sure point against most “C” boys, the odds is probably 75-25 in favour of a ACSI’s victory. 3 days later, the girls’ C Div will feature RGS against MGS. This will be an intriguing and nailbiting affair. Alot will depend on the playing order of each team’s star players, namely Denise Lim(RGS), Alethea Sim(MGS) and Cheryl Wong (MGS). It’s definitely a 50-50 matchup. As for the B Div, the boys’ event will see ACSI defending their title against FMSS (if I am not misinformed). With a team comprising of national juniors and Darren Subramaniam (one of the top Malaysian juniors), it will be uphill task for the FMSS team. Odds is almost 100% in favour of ACSI. Likewise in the girl event. SCGS, is red-hot favourite to defend their title successfully against a feisty RGS team. Helmed by top national juniors Mao Shi Yuan, Sherilyn Yang and Rachael Ang, it will be considered a upset of catastrophic proportion for SCGS if the RGS team, led by national junior Quak Su Lin, is able to surprise the pundits. The “B” boys’ final is on 27th April, Thursday and the girls’ is on 20th April, Tuesday. Be there, guys and gals.
thanks so much for the summary(most comprehensive summary ever)! Squash deserves more coverage 🙂
the B div finals has not yet to be decided.
SJI will be playing FMSS next tuesday. However, HCI lost to FMSS 2-3, but won SJI 3-2. So if SJI wins FMSS 5-0 or 4-1, SJI will be through to the finals. But if SJI wins 3-2, HCI will be in the finals. FMSS will be in the finals is they beat SJI. So it all rests next tuesday.
please put coverage on B Div please 😀 thanks (:

Disappointingly, having alrready secured their place in the final, SJI opted to sideline their top 2 players for their group-stage match against ACSI yesterday. Probably, it is a strategic move, with the intention to keep ACSI guessing and to conceal their tactics ahead of the expected title match in less than 2 weeks time. Anyway, for the record, ACSI streamrolled a severely-weakened SJI line-up 5-0.
ACS was a little stun when they notice the top2 players missing. One reason why we did that was to let the reserves have a chance to play and experience the game.
