Clementi Sports Hall, Tuesday, April 6, 2010 - Anglican High School beat Jurong Secodary 62-41 to dump the West Zone runners-up out of the National B Division Boys' Basketball Championship.
After falling to Raffles Institution by three points in an earlier match, Jurong had to beat Anglican High to qualify for the next round, but Anglican High were not in the mood for favours as they put on a dominating offensive display in the second quarter. With the win, the East Zone champions stormed to their third win in a row at the nationals and top spot in their group.
Danish (Jurong #4) gave Jurong a positive start, nailing a trey in the first possession of the game. That was all Jurong would see of any lead in the match as Anglican High quickly got into their zone and easily took the first quarter 14-6.
Jurong were not going away, and they came back in the second quarter with Jefferson Cheong hitting back-to-back three pointers in the second quarter. They managed to reduce the deficit at half-time to six points, keeping within striking distance at 17-22.
However, Anglican High provided the perfect response. The East Zone champions went on a rampage, scoring 19 points while limiting their opponents to just seven. Anglican High played as a team and almost all who played in the quarter got their names on the score sheet.
It was the same story in the fourth quarter as Anglican High controlled the game. They managed to established a 20-point lead midway through the final quarter and there was no looking back from there.
"I am not really pleased with our performance today," said captain Chee Khan Liang after the match. “We played as individuals in the second quarter instead of as a team. We were better in the second half and we all did our roles. Our aim was to beat them and we managed to do it."
Although they finished top of the group, their grouping in the last eight is not ideal for them. They will face strong favourites Unity in the next round along with South Zone champions Queensway Secondary and last year's national runners-up New Town Secondary in Group X.
"We will do our best throughout the second round," continued Khan Liang. "But for Unity, we'll have to give even more than 100%. Besides Unity, I think Queensway will be another tough opponent with Johann Yeo and their tall players."
North Vista, Yishun, Raffles Institution and Dunman make up the top eight teams and they will fight it out against each other in Group Y.
