Clementi Sports Hall, Friday, April 9, 2010 - Defending champions Dunman Secondary staged a dramatic comeback in the final quarter to beat Jurong Secondary 50-42 in the girls’ National B Division Basketball Championship.

"I was quite calm about it (the comeback in the last quarter) because when we were the champions last year, we also staged a comeback like this in the semis and the final itself, so I always knew that my school's players have the ability," commented Danny Wong, coach of Dunman Secondary.

After losing to Unity the day before, Dunman Secondary had to beat Jurong to have any chance to making it to the semi-finals. A win for Jurong, on the other hand, would send them through as they already recorded a win against Assumption English School.

Both teams were evenly matched and spectators were kept at the edge of their seats throughout the four quarters.

The match started sluggishly, with Dunman drawing first blood from a free throw. The match only picked up towards the final minutes of the period when Michelle Tsen (Jurong #5) scored a three-pointer to tie it at 7-7. Michelle scored again just before the end of the first quarter to give her team a marginal two-point lead over Dunman.

Jurong continued to extend their lead in the second quarter with Anthea Chan (Jurong #14) scoring a free throw followed by another three-pointer by Michelle. However, their lead was short-lived.

Dunman replied with two lay ups and a three-pointer to regain the lead over Jurong. Both teams were neck and neck in the second quarter. With 30 seconds remaining, Dunman’s #7 scored a three-pointer but Jocelin See (Jurong #11) quickly replied with a lay up to reduce the deficit, and the first half ended with Jurong trailing 22-23.

The third quarter was equally intense as both teams stepped up on their game and played more aggressively. Jurong extended their lead with more three-pointers from Michelle and Leow Jie Yi (Jurong #4). They eventually took a 34-28 lead into the final quarter.

Lagging behind by six points at the start of the fourth quarter, Dunman went on an 11-5 run to tie the game. With slightly more than three minutes remaining, Dunman’s #7 contributed another eight points to the team with impressive three-pointers and lay ups to open up the lead.

Dunman eventually scored the final free throw to seal the come-from-behind 50-42 victory over Jurong.

Jurong will have to beat Unity by at least six points when they face each other on Monday April 19 at 1600 hours to qualify for the semi-finals while Dunman will seal their spot in the top four if they beat Assumption English School.

Both matches will be played at Clementi Sports Hall.
