Choa Chu Kang Sports Hall, Tuesday, May 4, 2010 – Last year’s runners-up Meridian Junior College recovered from a defeat to Raffles Institution to crush Millennia Institute 16-0 in the first round of the A Division Boys’ Floorball Championship.
Meridian JC had previously lost 4-3 to RI in Group B, but they bounced back in style, hitting 16 past Millennia Institute. They now have nine points from four games and will seal their spot in the last four if they beat National Junior College in their final group match.
Meridian JC captain Jared Goh scored a total of six goals as his team easily swept MI aside. They boasted a 6-0 lead at the end of the first period, before scoring another seven goals in the next for a 13-0 advantage. Meridian JC then scored another three goals to easily see out the match.
“This is probably our best performance so far,” commented captain Jared Goh after the match. “We were calm and clinical in front of goal. It was unlike previous matches when we might have been a bit complacent. This is still the group stage and I don’t think we have hit our peak yet.”
“Right now we are taking one game at a time and not thinking of the final yet. We have lost to Raffles Institution and we might meet Victoria JC in the semi-finals,” he added. “But it doesn’t matter since we’ll meet them one way or another.”
“For Victoria JC, I think they are holding back. They might be tired or something as their match was the first one and I am definitely expecting more from them.”
Raffles Institution failed to follow up on their victory against Meridian JC, and stumbled to a 1-1 draw against Temasek JC.
Both teams had multiple chances to take the lead in the first two periods, but they were unable to break through each other’s defense. RI eventually took the lead in the opening minute of the third period, but Temasek JC were quick to respond through Sebastian See two minutes later.
The game eventually finished 1-1 with both sides unable to trouble each other’s goal.
Raffles Institution are now top of Group B with 10 points from four matches and will next play Anglo-Chinese JC, who have nine points, for a place in the semi-finals.
Both matches will be played on Thursday, May 6th, 2010, at Choa Chu Kang Sports Hall.
In Group A, defending champions Victoria Junior College qualified for the semi-finals with a 5-1 victory over River Valley High.
With one game left to play, Victoria JC now sit atop of Group A with a perfect 3-0 win-loss record. Yishun JC are second with nine points from three games.
“Although we won 5-1, we didn’t take our chances,” said VJC’s Captain Augustine Foo after his side’s victory over River Valley High. “We could have done better. I think if we stick to our game plan and play hard, we’ll be able to retain the title this year.”
When asked about what he thought of Meridian JC’s 16-0 win over MI, he said, “They are playing well, but besides them, Raffles Institution and Yishun JC will also be the teams to beat.”
