Singapore Basketball Centre, Friday, May 7, 2010 – Both the Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) boys’ and girls’ teams have qualified for their respective A Division Basketball Championship semi-finals after winning two matches each in the second round.
The HCI boys’ team had previously defeated Jurong Junior College 81-49 and they registered their second victory in Group X against Anglo-Chinese School (International), beating them 79-34. Although their opponents kept the scores close in the first quarter, HCI ultimately managed to extend their lead in the remaining three quarters for a comfortable victory.
With a place in the semi-finals sealed, they will next face Anderson Junior College for top spot of Group X. Anderson Junior College wrapped up semi-final qualification with wins over Anglo-Chinese School (International) (68-18) and Jurong Junior College (61-36).
In Group Y, Victoria Junior College (VJC) took a step closer to the semi-finals after overcoming Temasek Junior College (TJC) 55-37. VJC took the lead in the first quarter, but TJC stormed back in the second to narrow the deficit. However, VJC recovered in the second half to hold off their opponents, winning the fourth quarter 18-6.
In the other group game, Raffles Institution (RI) recovered from a 32-46 defeat to TJC, beating Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) 59-25. RI will now have to beat VJC by 11 points in their next match to qualify for the semi-finals at the expense of TJC.
In the girls’ Group Y, HCI sealed a spot in the last four with a 65-17 thrashing of TJC. HCI led from start to finish, establishing a 15-4 lead by the end of the first quarter. They then held TJC to zero points in the third quarter while scoring 20 points of their own. The fourth quarter was merely a formality as HCI won it 20-5.
Raffles Institution also booked their place in the semi-finals with a 57-27 victory over Dunman High in another Group Y match. They previously edged out TJC 37-36.
HCI and RI will face off against each other for the pole position of Group Y.
VJC took a huge step towards the semi-finals with a 53-28 win over St. Andrew’s Junior College in Group X. VJC now have a perfect 2-0 win-loss record in the second round after thrashing Jurong Junior College 62-30 in an earlier match.
National Junior College kept their hopes of making it to the semi-final alive with a close 35-24 win over Jurong JC. They will have to beat VJC by at least two points in their next match to be assured of a spot in the semi-finals.
All matches will be played on Tuesday, May 11th, 2010, starting from 1300 hours.
