For those not familiar with how StarHub sells their pay TV services, it takes awhile to figure out what you need to know on their website.
If you are not an existing subscriber of either SingTel or StarHub, how much will it cost you if you wanted to watch the World Cup?
In another post, we calculated that it will cost $124.12 if you go with SingTel’s mio TV.
For StarHub, based on a phone conversation with their customer service representative (see below), you have to sign up for a minimum three-month contract that will cost $89.88. Only then can you sign up for the World Cup package at $70.62, the early-bird price up to May 31st. From June 1st, the price is $94.16.
So the grand total you have to fork out if you want to watch the World Cup on StarHub?
$160.50.
That is $36.38 more than the mio TV deal.
Don’t be surprised though if the deals change constantly over the next few days and weeks in response to the sign-up rate for the World Cup package. So please check before signing up and read the fine print. The smaller the print, the more caution we recommend.
Phone conversation between Red Sports and a StarHub customer service representative at 11:19am on Tuesday, May 11th, 2010 after calling 1630
StarHub: Good morning. How may I help you?
Red Sports: I want to watch the World Cup but I’m not an existing customer.
StarHub: You must sign up for cable tv.
Red Sports: What does that mean?
StarHub: That means the minimum three basic groups, plus a rental of the set-top box. Then you can sign up for world cup which is $70.62, a one-time payment.
Red Sports: What is the cost of the three basic groups?
StarHub: The original price is $25.68 per month, not including rental of the set top box. Depends on whether you want recording or non-recording set-top box.
Red Sports: Recording set-top box costs more?
StarHub: Yes, around $8 per month.
Red Sports: And sounds like I have to sign up for a contract?
StarHub: You can sign month by month but you will pay original price plus $8.56 for rental of set-top box. $4.28 for non-recording set-top box. So total $29.96, but must sign up for three months and then FIFA [World Cup package] on top of that.
Red Sports: Do I have to go to the StarHub customer centre to sign up?
StarHub: We can deliver to you. My technician who goes down will verify your NRIC (identity card) and you will sign the acknowledgment forms.
Red Sports: What is the average turnaround time? When can it be done?
StarHub: Earliest is tomorrow. If you sign up for one year, there is a $10.70 discount per month, and you get a 50% discount on hub station (set-top box).
Red Sports: If I decide not to continue is there a charge?
StarHub: If you terminate within the contract, there is an early termination charge. it will be pro-rated.
Red Sports: Are there additional discounts if I sign up for two years instead of one?
StarHub: With two years, it’s also $10.70 discount per month for 24 months.
