Choa Chu Kang Sports Hall, Wednesday, May 12, 2010 – Nur Harilyn (VJC #13) scored five goals as last year’s runners-up Victoria Junior College (VJC) outclassed River Valley High School (RVHS) 9-0 to book their spot in the final of the A Division Girls’ Floorball Championship.
“I am just happy be given the chance to contribute to the team and make it to the final,” said the five-goal hero, Nur Harilyn after the match. “Today’s match was a total team effort and we didn’t concede any goals which was the objective of the match for us. It was undoubtedly our best performance of the tournament and even our coach didn’t have anything to say to us!”
There was no real doubt of the end result with VJC taking the lead three minutes into the game before extending their lead to 3-0 by the end of the first. They continued to extend their lead throughout the match as RVHS found no reply to their superior opponents.
VJC controlled the game from the face-off and it took them just three minutes to break RVHS’ defense when Veronica Lim (VJC #27) turned the ball into the back of the net after captain Melissa Gan (#11)’s shot was saved by the RVHS’s goalkeeper.
Last season’s runners-up continued to dominate the game and Nur Harilyn got her first goal after she tapped-in following a shot. She got her second and VJC’s third two minutes later when she sent a stinging shot into the far post, giving RVHS’ goalkeeper no chance.
Shot after shot from VJC was sent raining onto RVHS’ goal and it must have been a relief for RVHS when the buzzer sounded for the end of the first period.
Much of the same followed in the second period with VJC going in search of a fourth goal. They found it through Nur Narilyn, who completed her hat-trick, after the ball was threaded through to her and she made no mistake from the good position.
With eight seconds left in the second, captain Melissa Gan (VJC #11) added another for her side with a low shot to the right. Her goal gave VJC a commanding 5-0 lead to take into the final period.
The third period was a mere formality as VJC extended their lead. Nur Harilyn got on the score sheet two more times before Melissa Gan and an own-goal by Cherie Loh sealed a comfortable victory for VJC and spot in the final.
They will challenge against Raffles Institution for the title, after the latter edged out defending champions Meridian Junior College 3-1. It will be played on Tuesday, May 18th, 2010 at Republic Polytechnic at 1400 hours.
“There is no room for complacency,” commented Nur Harilyn on the final. “We drew with them [Raffles Institution] 3-3 in the last round so we’ll have to take all our chances. Watch out for us!”

Part of the credit for VJC’s win should go to their additional ‘off-court player(s)’. VJC supporters packed the stands and gave a morale-boosting atmosphere for their team. (Photo 7 © Thomas Tan/Red Sports)
