For those who have no cable TV subscription, StarHub just made it cheaper to catch the World Cup on their platform. You can find out more yourself on their website.
Last week, we called up StarHub to find out about its World Cup package for those who are presently not subscribers to their pay TV service.
On the day we called, Wednesday, May 11th, we found it it would cost $160.50. (You can read the story here.)
Today, this writer went down to the StarHub counter at VivoCity and found out that it would only cost $70.62.
$70.62 is the early-bird price for the World Cup package. Last week, the StarHub representative told this writer over the phone that I needed to sign up for a minimum three-month contract that will cost $89.88. Only then could I then sign up for the World Cup package at $70.62. Hence the total cost of $160.50 for brand new subscribers.
However, things seem to have changed since then and you now need to pay only $70.62 for the World Cup package and you get three basic groups and the set-top box free. After three months, if you do not wish to continue, you can return the set-top box and are not obliged to carry on with their service.
An industry source indicated that the take-up rate is currently slow although he added that based on his experience of the last two World Cups, Singaporeans are notoriously last-minute in signing up for pay TV packages.
Ultimately, we recommend you read the fine print before you sign on the dotted line. Do not just take our word for it. The pricing may change even as you read this.
We will continue to make weekly checks on the World Cup package because the situation will remain fluid as both StarHub and SingTel continually adjust their pricing based on the take-up rate.
In the meantime, the People’s Association stepped in with a major announcement that they will provide free screenings of the World Cup at 16 community clubs. This will go some way in providing access to those who are not in a position to subscribe to the World Cup for financial or other reasons.
